This position supports the Division of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R).
Under the supervision of the Operations Coordinator, this position:
- Provides administrative, functional, and programmatic support to Emergency Management functions including operations, planning, logistics, training, exercises, volunteer coordination, facilities management, and incident response.
- Assists senior operations personnel by supporting the readiness of resources and personnel, their activation, deployment, sustained operations, and demobilization during public health emergencies.
- Assists the EP&R logistics program by tracking, maintaining, and ensuring the readiness of equipment and inventory items. Assembles mission-ready deployment kits for a variety of public health emergency responses. Deploys, delivers, retrieves, and demobilizes equipment used during emergency responses.
- Assists in the development, review, and revision of plans, standard operating procedures, job aids, and job action sheets. Supports plan and procedure development through research on best practices and observation.
- Supports training and exercise activities by developing exercise documentation, supporting in-person training, and participating in exercises as a player, controller, or evaluator as needed.
- Provides clerical support to EP&R staff during meetings with internal and external partners. Documents meeting minutes, takes notes, and compiles and distributes post-meeting materials upon request. Performs data entry and other administrative tasks in support of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).
- Serves in a supporting role on the Health Department’s Incident Management Team (IMT) and assists in the routine management of the team.
Note: Health department positions are designated as emergency responders in the event of a public health crisis. As a public health emergency responder, this position may be reassigned to provide support based on the emergency response service needs. The temporary reassignment may require employees to function in a role outside of the typical job duties and/or work an alternative work schedule to include weekends and evenings.
The salary for this position may not exceed the midpoint. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Valid driver's license
- CPR (Required within 60 days)
- AED (Required within 60 days)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fundamental knowledge of public health emergency preparedness, National Incident Management System (NIMS), and Incident Command System (ICS).
- Awareness and basic understanding of systems commonly used in Emergency Management including collaboration tools, mass notification systems, geographic information systems (GIS), public safety radio systems, etc.
- Exceptional organization and time management skills that reflect an ability to manage multiple, time-sensitive priorities, projects, and deliverables with excellent attention to details.
- Advanced-level clerical and data entry skills using Microsoft Office 365 products.
- Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving during stressful, complex situations.
- Expert-level written and oral communications with demonstrated ability to develop written products, both technical and non-technical, for a diverse range of audiences
- Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
- Flexibility to work in a dynamic, emergency preparedness and response-focused environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary in nature; however, job entails walking, standing, sitting, stooping, climbing stairs, reaching and bending; using hands to grasp, handle, and feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor, digital display, print-outs, and audio-visual instruments. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Must be able to lift from a ground position and carry up to 25 lbs. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally (in person or telephone) and in writing. Must have ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license. Incumbent generally works in an office setting but will be required to work in other non-office environments including outdoor settings and nighttime hours. Must be able to participate fully as a member of the health department’s emergency response unit. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
