About the Position

Under general supervision, the Electrician position performs the full range of skilled journey-level electrical and related work. This position is responsible for electrical work including installation, maintenance, modification and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems. The Electrician will inspect, isolate, troubleshoot and repair electrical malfunctions using various test instruments; maintain and repair low voltage systems including fire, alarm and access systems; test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; plan the layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations; fabricate electrical parts; maintain a safe and clean work environment; and perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

The Electrician also advises in the selection and storage of electrical equipment; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations, and inspect related work performed by contractors. This position also provides estimates for cost, time and materials for electrical projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of an electrical shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using a computerized record-keeping system; prepare standard reports; and consult and work with other trades workers. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials. Incumbents typically hold a license or applicable certification. Incumbents may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants. The successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate with peers, managers, project managers (internal and external), campus scheduler and the larger campus community.

Responsibilities

Will be a major contributor to the electrical shop within facilities, including, but not limited to, the tasks listed below:

  • Respond to routine, urgent and emergency work orders.
  • Provide assistance to contractors.
  • Respond to alarms and perform troubleshooting on alarm systems.
  • Repair, test and install exit signs.
  • Troubleshoot power outages, including non-functional outlets.
  • Trace electrical lines, repair and label electrical panels.
  • Respond to after callbacks for after-hours emergencies.
  • Work collaboratively with other trades to complete work and projects.
  • Perform preventative maintenance.
  • Document, report and advise supervisor on deferred maintenance matters.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the repair and replacement of campus lighting.
  • This work includes the changing of bulbs, replacing ballasts, preventive maintenance and ordering of material.
  • Training, inspections shop, and clean-up.
  • Time keeping, inventory, and ordering material.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program.

Abilities:

  • Must be able to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses.
  • Operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled electrical work.
  • Read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; make rough sketches.
  • Estimate the cost, time and materials of electrical work.
  • Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Prepare standard reports.
  • Provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
  • Analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Read and write at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
  • Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

Knowledge:

  • Work requires thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.

License / Certifications

  • Journey level skill equivalent to that acquired through completion of an apprenticeship program.
  • Employees must successfully complete hazardous materials, lead and asbestos training courses offered by the university.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and will be required to obtain a State of California Defensive Driving Permit.

Physical Requirements

  • Employees must be able to work in high locations on ladders, scaffolds, motorized equipment, etc.
  • Employees must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Employees must be able to work in varying climatic conditions, to include inclement weather.
  • Employees must be able to wear a respirator.
  • Some work on weekends and holidays may be required, and the workweek will be adjusted accordingly.
  • May be required to work alone if working conditions dictate.
  • Position may be needed during campus emergencies such as power outages, minor and major natural disasters, pandemics, etc.

Condition(s) of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate. LiveScan is conducted through the University Police Department.
