The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full-time Electrician - Utilities in the Public Works Department.

Summary of Duties

Are you experienced in maintaining, and repairing equipment such as motors, generators, and electrical control systems? If so, please consider applying for this Electrician position today!

As a Electrician- Utilities, you will:

  • Responsible for the daily supervision, training, and mentorship of the Electrician and Electrician Apprentice, and can verify their work experience with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

  • Repairs and maintains major equipment including motors, generators, and electrical control systems.
  • Ability to work safely and confidently with low to medium voltage systems (120V-480V).
  • Maintains and troubleshoots motor control cabinets for electric motors ranging from 75 hp to 600 hp (including starters, variable frequency drives, and breakers).
  • Repairs and troubleshoots wastewater lift station control panels throughout the city, 230V/480V systems, 3-phase and single phase.
  • Performs electrical checks on emergency diesel generators up to 1000KW and automatic transfer switches.
  • Tests defective equipment to determine the cause of malfunction or failure using standard electrical test equipment.
  • Inspects all equipment on a regularly scheduled basis; meets all requirements of the established preventive maintenance program.
  • Works to keep all equipment and buildings in compliance with electrical codes.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements to existing equipment and facilities.
  • Supports capital improvement and rehabilitation projects at city water and wastewater facilities. Reviews engineering plans and specifications for new or replacement equipment (including layouts and one-line diagrams) and discusses/ coordinates needs with engineering consultants.
  • Repairs and maintains all facility electrical wiring and fixtures according to building codes.
  • Assists with the replacement or installation of existing or new equipment.
  • Inspects circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding and repairs or rewires plant equipment systems, according to electrical codes.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate must be extremely organized and able to manage the logistics of multiple duties with professionalism and strong communication skills. In addition, they will have a strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment—both critical for success in the role, as are high levels of accuracy, timeliness and dependability. Ideal candidates will also look for innovative, trailblazing solutions to challenges We are looking for someone who can establish and maintain effective working relationships within the organization and work effectively with all levels of employees and management.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from High School or GED certificate.
  • Minimum four (4) years as a commercial or industrial electrician with direct installation, repair, and maintenance experience of electrical systems. Experience in water or wastewater facilities preferred, but not required.

Training (License and/or Certification):

  • Valid License as a Journeyman or Maintenance Electrician in accordance with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver License.
  • TCEQ Class C Groundwater license desired or should be obtained within three years of employment.
  • TCEQ Class II Wastewater Collection license desired or should be obtained within three years of employment.
  • This position trains under the general supervision of a Master Electrician with the intent of testing for a Master Electrician’s license (applies to Journeyman License holders only).
