Job description

Moffatt & Nichol is actively searching for an Electrical Engineer with a specialty in power systems to join our Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation (MEI) team in Norfolk, VA. The successful Electrical Engineer will work on both large and small projects for the local shipyards including Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Norfolk Naval Station, Virginia Port Authority, and municipal clients as well as support firm-wide projects and Senior Engineers around the company. The Engineer will support projects both on the job site as well as in the office.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Complete electrical designs to support firm-wide projects by working with Project Managers (any discipline) and electrical teammates
  • Provide design calculations, design drawings, and project specifications for the following but not limited to:
    • Medium/low voltage power distribution systems
    • Grounding systems
    • Lighting systems
    • Lightning protection systems
    • Communications systems
    • Electrical equipment design (including switchboards and switchgear)
    • Selective coordination and arc flash studies
  • Assist with the electrical designs for multidiscipline projects
  • Assist with evaluations of project scopes
  • Travel to the site or meet with clients, sub-consultants, utilities, and other parties to investigate site conditions and meet project requirements
  • Assist in companywide Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes
  • Successfully communicate and interact with internal and external clients and team members
  • Perform other duties as needed

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • PE license or an EIT working towards PE registration
  • 2 to 6 years of related experience in:
    • Medium/low voltage power distribution systems
    • Grounding systems
    • Lighting systems
    • Communications systems
    • Electrical equipment design (including switchboards and switchgear)
    • Selective coordination and arc flash studies preferred
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit is required
  • Proficiency ETAP or EasyPower and AGI32 are preferred but not required
  • Willingness and availability to travel, some overnight stays will be required
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Possess DBIDS card or eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
  • Due to client requirements, selected candidate must show proof of U.S. citizenship. A federal background check will be conducted

Working conditions:

Generally most work for this position will take place in the Moffatt & Nichol offices. At times, site visits may be required for meetings, client interactions and site assessments. Site work will also take place in substations and electrical rooms.

Physical requirements:

The work for this position is generally not physically demanding. Most work will be in the office with travel and field investigations, as required.
