The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

**This is a TEMPORARY position meaning not permanent at this time; could be subject to change but no guarantee**PROGRAM DESCRIPTION         

The Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research and the National Cancer Institute at Frederick provide comprehensive professional EHS services to employees working in general offices, industrial shops, experimental research laboratories, and animal care environments. Work is performed within the offices of the EHS Directorate and across the campus in various customer locations.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform safety and environmental compliance tasks, packaging of hazardous material for pickup, hazardous spill cleanups, hazard decontamination, hazardous waste disposal, and provide assistance and other services as needed, employee instruction on safety and health and pollution prevention, etc.
  • Maintain safety equipment inventory, performs periodic safety inspections, monitors hazardous waste removal vendors, and assist in consolidating hazardous wastes (chemical, medical and radioactive).
  • Identify and monitor safety/health hazards, exposures, and environmental concerns and initiates corrective action.  Performs workplace safety inspections, reports results, and monitors corrective actions.
  • Conduct surveys for evidence of contamination by radioactive, chemical, or biological hazardous materials.
  • Perform safety assessments of laboratory procedures, equipment, and facilities to maintain a safe and healthful work environment and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct surveys and inspections of work areas to assess safe work conditions.
  • Attend training sessions to obtain appropriate certifications from MDE, EPA, DOT, etc.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment and instrumentation.
  • Maintain effective communications (verbal and written) with a broad range of employees.
  • Use relevant software and systems to complete duties and maintain records (Cority, SIIMS).
  • Maintain confidentiality pertaining to occupational exposure, medical and similar data.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.   
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years' experience in safety operations and hazardous waste, preferably at a biomedical research facility.
  • Successful completion of college level general coursework in algebra, physics, biology, and chemistry; demonstrated knowledge of standard scientific methods and measuring instruments. Familiarity with safety regulations to include OSHA, DOT, MDE, EPA, NRC, etc.
  • As determined by the program requirements, this position will be designated as an Occasional Driver and will be responsible for complying with the Leidos Biomedical Use of Government Owned or Leased Vehicles Policy.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations.
  • This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance.
  • This position is subject to working with radioactive material and requires to be an approved radiation worker.
