Educational Assistants in the Summer STEAM program support certified staff in providing delivery of the instructional program. This includes: materials preparation, supporting lunch duty and student pick up/drop off, individual student and small group support. Educational Assistants will also receive professional development in program design and implementation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Works with individuals and small groups in the classroom to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
- Serves as a model in developing students’ language and behavior.
- Collects, prepares and arranges resource material for use by certified personnel.
- Maintains classroom records, prepares reports as requested by the classroom teacher, manages supplies and classroom equipment as needed.
- Monitors student activities in classrooms, school grounds, hallways, lunchrooms, field trips, bus loading areas, etc
- Daily support for student drop-off and pick up
- Provides support for non-instructional classroom duties such as monitoring snacks, restrooms, clothing areas, etc.
- Participates in workshops and conferences as requested by immediate supervisor and or district
- Assists students and teachers with computer-related activities including software use, hardware use and troubleshooting.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead activities and instruction both indoors and outdoors with groups of students
- Serve as a group lead during outdoor field experiences
- Be active participants with and alongside students, including engineering challenges, outdoor activities, etc.
- Scheduled time weekly for planning with cooperating teachers
- EAs will be required to attend paid professional development as determined by the program manager.
- All duties shall be performed under the direction, but not necessarily the presence of a certified employee.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation:
- The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds in supplies which requires bending, stooping and lifting.
- The employee must use hands and arms to manipulate objects.
- The employee must use keyboards, tools and other controls.
- The employee must sit and stand for long periods of time.
- The employee must have normal vision and hearing with or without aid.
- The employee must be able to move about assigned locations unaided during the work day.
- The Summer STEAM Program includes daily outdoor learning and will require being outdoors in variable weather conditions daily.
The minimum expectations for this job are as follows:
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Flexibility, organization, decision making and problem solving skills.
- Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.
- Knowledge of APS community, computer system, financial procedures, and legal requirements.
- Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others.
- Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect.
- Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting teachers and students.
- Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff.
All candidates must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, must be at least 18 years of age, and must meet the NCLB highly qualified requirements.
NCLB requirements are:
- 48 college credit hours OR Pass the Paraprofessional Test

The program will be housed at GI Sanchez Collaborative Community School,Tres Volcanes Community School, Janet Kahn Integrated Arts Magnet School and the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center. Students attend from 9:00am-1:30pm Monday-Friday.
Summer STEAM Experience Educational Assistant Schedule:
- Monday-Friday 8:30am-2:30pm
- Program dates for EAs will include orientation and professional development prior to June 10.
- EA work day is June 10-June 28, M-F 8:30-2:30.
- There is no program on Juneteenth.
