Reports To: Education Associate, Data and Operations Officer
Description of Position: The Enterprise Data Specialist is responsible for providing critical customer service support to the Department and Local Education Agencies (LEAs). This position will be critical in advancing the Department's efforts by developing, implementing, securing, maintaining, and optimizing extract, transformation, and load (ETL) processes for the movement of data within the Department's data architecture. This position will support Department leadership and other stakeholders by ensuring data collected from various sources are quality-controlled, secured, and made available for data use in reporting and analytics.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains Extract Transform and Load (ETL) packages to transform data from the statewide student information system into the Department's data warehouse using Microsoft SQL Server and Business Intelligence tools like SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) in conjunction with the Ed-Fi and Common Education Data Standards (CEDS).
- Leads, implements, and supports level one-i.e. invalid data-and level two-i.e. incorrect data-quality assurance efforts from data source, through the data standard transformations, into the data warehouse.
- Develops and maintains deep knowledge of the evolving data standards relevant to the Department and its data architecture.
- Assists Team Lead with managing assigned educational data domains and provide support to Department and internal data staff.
- Continuously improves and expands data warehouse domains per Departmental needs.
- Engages with users, and internal staff to ensure implemented solutions satisfy business requirements and are delivered in a timely manner.
Essential Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in the areas of accounting, business, finance, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, data science, english, communications, social sciences, or related field required.
Experience:
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience with large data sets, preferably using Microsoft SQL Server relational databases and enterprise information systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency with analytical software and in creating and modifying structured query language (SQL), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), or other programming languages and tools.
- Experience managing multiple projects while ensuring that goals and priorities are met.
- Experience with Microsoft Power BI a plus, but not required.
- General knowledge of education related data domains a plus, but not required.
Skills:
- Proven experience in moving data from one source to another.
- Strategic mindset, including demonstrated ability to problem-solve effectively and efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements in data specifications.
- Good project management skills in public, non-profit and/or private sectors; track record of delivering results against tight deadlines.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly in translating data into easy-to-interpret, actionable reports, presentations, and findings.
- Must be proficient in performing responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Must be skilled in setting priorities, working under pressure, and working in collaboration with others.
- Must be able to proactively solve problems with professionalism.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with staff in a tactful, congenial, and personal manner.
- Must be experienced in exercising discretion and confidentiality in all professional duties.
Salary:
Salary will be computed in accordance with the education, experience, and training of the individual selected and in accordance with salary schedules for employees of the Department of Education. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
