Job description

Summary:

The Education Program Specialist reports to the Director of Education and is responsible for administering and delivering the Museum’s formal and informal Education Programs developed primarily for school-based audiences (teachers, students and parents/families). This position is responsible for the implementation of all facets of Education Program delivery, including but not limited to: program conception, development, and coordination with teachers and schools, as well as capturing and analyzing pre- and post-program evaluations.

The Education Program Specialist oversees the coordination and delivery of the Museum’s distance learning initiative, outreach to schools on local, regional and national levels; develops and strengthens new and emerging relationships, as well as collaborates effectively with educators to ensure programs meet their needs. This position also works actively across all the Museum’s departments including Collections & Interpretation staff to create compelling educational content in support of a broad range of interpretive and exhibit projects. Collaboration and effective communication with the Guest Services and Group Sales team is also vital.

Museum Description:

Located inside the former Texas School Book Depository Building (TSBD Bldg) in downtown Dallas, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey attracts visitors from all over the United States and across the world. In 1989, the main exhibit, John F. Kennedy and the Memory of a Nation opened to the public on the sixth floor where critical evidence was found linked to the President Kennedy’s Assassination on November 22, 1963. The exhibit is divided into key historical sections with contextual overlays following the path of John F. Kennedy’s life, death and legacy. The Museum encourages visitors to examine the evolution of today’s global society through Kennedy’s presidential legacy.


Essential Responsibilities:

School Programming (35%)

  • Develop and implement K-12 Education Programs for onsite, offsite and online audiences.
  • Conduct onsite, offsite and distance learning Education Programs in conjunction with Education Department members.
  • Assist with the creation and facilitation of school-Museum partnership opportunities.
  • Design, implement and manage strategies for evaluating school program impact.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with educators, schools, districts, educator organizations and resource groups.
  • Represent the Museum at school outreach events such as school fairs, homeschool days, History Day contests, etc.
  • Assist Guest Services Department with scheduling school programs and tours.

Education Curriculum and Learning Materials (30%)

  • Develop education curriculum, program offerings, learning resources and associated materials for Museum exhibits and Education Department initiatives for school, youth and family audiences in conjunction with other museum content specialists and community partners.
  • Collaborate with museum departments on exhibit and program development as a member of the Interpretation team.
  • Facilitate the implementation of the Museum’s Education Collection in programming including overseeing the collection’s growth and content diversity.

Teacher Programming (25%)

  • Create and conduct professional development opportunities for teachers to take place at the Museum, offsite and virtually in conjunction with the Director of Education.
  • Present Museum opportunities and content at educator conferences at the local, state and national level.
  • Design teacher materials for use online and in the classroom.
  • Assist with the development of a Teacher Advisory Group.

Education Marketing and Outreach (10%)

  • Create education mailings and promotions including educator newsletters.
  • Assist with identifying and participating in outreach opportunities for K-12, youth, family and educator audiences.
  • Collaborate with Guest Services Department to expand the school outreach list, ensuring diverse representation of North Texas schools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters’ Degree in social studies, education, museum studies, museum education, political science or related field preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a school or museum educator, community engagement or outreach involving education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Teaching or program development experience for middle school or high school strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and national curriculum standards.
  • Knowledge of US History, US Government, Kennedy presidency and/or 20th Century history preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content delivery methods and classroom management.
  • Working familiarity with virtual presentation software including Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and prioritize workflow.
  • Ability to interact in positive and effective manner with internal and external parties.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed, based on scheduled educational programs.
