The Editor position exists to manage the editorial process and to make creative contributions to magazines, tablet editions, digital media, social media content, FocusOnTheFamily.com, and the mobile applications directly and through freelance writers. The Editor may be responsible for managing content development strategy for specific departments as determined by content development leadership and Editorial Director.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Conceives and brainstorms with team about viable ideas and concepts for publication in all mediums; print, e-mail, web, mobile and social
Creates original copy, organizes facts, conducts interviews, edits tablet, social media and other material into the most compelling form
Reviews and selects high-quality manuscripts that support mobile/magazine/online objectives
Edits manuscripts from in-house and freelance writers according to standard English grammar, Associated Press style book, and FOF philosophy
Proofreads copy at various stages of development to ensure quality consistent with Focus on the Family standards and principles
Conducts first-hand research and maintains contact list
Oversees freelance writers; assists in acquiring and developing new writers and/or content as needed
Maintains currency with target audience through extensive reading, personal contact, and Internet research
Maintains communication and relationship with ministry/teams on content strategy and content development
Coordinates with other departments as directed to secure aggregated content coordination
Fully participates in editorial and design meetings
Works with designers on direction for layouts and artwork that enhances the content
Monitors and controls expenses to budget
Selects, develops, motivates, supervises, and evaluates editorial staff
Fills in for Editorial Director as needed
Consults with legal counsel on article content as required
Other Duties/Responsibilities:
Occasionally researches, creates, and writes original articles for publication
Conducts training for staff editors and writers
Performs other duties as assigned
Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job:
May manage a staff of 2 - 5 people; may supervise freelance writers

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or English
5-7 years successful writing, editing and project management experience

Salary Range: $70,716 to $81,117/yr
