Job description

Program and Roles Summary: The Home Visitor provides child development and parent involvement services to families which includes home visits, socializations, and case management in accordance with program guidelines. The Home Visitor is responsible for delivering prenatal education and home-based services as defined by Head Start Performance Standards. The Home Visitor aids child development and growth through the implementation of an age-appropriate child centered curriculum and works with parents to strengthen their knowledge and skills in child development in order that they may more effectively guide the learning experiences of the children.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide curriculum driven child development, parent education and family support during weekly, 90-minute home visits to enrolled families of infants and toddlers and parents.
  • Plan for and facilitate a minimum of 2 socializations per month with parent-child interaction and other activities.
  • Provide support, planning and education to expected mothers to ensure a healthy pre-natal experience.
  • Coordinate successful completion of all required screenings/assessments of assigned children and their families.
  • In partnership with parents, provide developmentally appropriate curriculum for infants and toddlers; develop in partnership with parents an individual development plan for each child.
  • Conduct a Family Assessment for each assigned family and develop Family Partnership Agreements to support them in achieving their goals.
  • Monitor and educate parents with respect to children’s health status, including monitoring medical follow-up, physical health, dental health, mental health, and nutritional intake.
  • Provide support services to families and act as a liaison and advocate between community resources and assigned families.
  • Complete all required paperwork, documentation and case records within established deadlines and ensure all child/family files are up to date and accurate. Complete data entry for all assigned families including the COPA system and maintain confidentiality of all related records and information according Ada S. McKinley policy and procedures.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other involved Child Development Program staff to provide required and necessary services. Participate in all required and necessary staff meetings.
  • Daily driving is required.

  • Must demonstrate the experiences, beliefs, attitude and awareness that indicate cultural sensitivity to the client population served.
  • Must be able to partner with participants individually, in family, to help them mobilize resources and their inner capacity to address problems they face.
  • Strong approach in working with families that is empathic, non-judgmental, respectful and professional.
  • Willingness to work primarily in homes of families residing in high-risk communities and flexibility with respect to time and days.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with other team members, other Agency resources and outside services in addressing client needs.
  • Must be a member of Gateways to Opportunity and have a level 3 Family Specialist certification and able to move up to a level 5 by 2025.
  • Must have ability to problem solve, handle crises and work with families and children from low-income backgrounds.
  • This position requires the individual demonstrate the experiences, beliefs, attitude and awareness that indicate cultural sensitivity to the client population served.
  • This position requires the individual possess the ability to partner with clients individually and/or in family to help them mobilize resources and build resilience.
  • This position requires the individual possess the ability to coordinate effectively with other team members, other Agency resources and outside services in addressing client needs.
  • This position requires the individual possess an understanding of evidence-informed practices, engagement strategies, boundary setting, concurrent documentation, working in a community setting, organizing, motivational interviewing, and family systems.
  • Must be familiar with the operation of but not limited to: desktop computer systems, cell phone, laptop, notebook, netbook, and tablet type devices knowledge of community resources and ability to use a variety of applications on a computer
  • Staff are expected to have the ability to work remotely from home if necessary, and with Supervisory approval. Safety Protocols while at the office and within the community are to be strictly adhered.

Mental/Physical Demands: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients, and other employees of the organization. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; Work is performed in either an office or home environment.

Experience

Required
  • 2 year(s): Must have at least two years' experience working with children and families in a human services or education setting. Must provide own vehicle, valid Driver's License and proof of full insurance coverage.

Education

Required
  • Associates or better in Early Childhood Education or related field
