Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Home Visitor plans and implements educational activities for pregnant mothers and families with children ages birth to three years old. The Home Visitor delivers services in the home environment or agreed location and in a socialization setting, modeling appropriate behaviors and empowering parents to be their children's first teacher.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY TASKS:

  • Recruit families through canvassing and outreach events;
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with children and families in the program;
  • Conduct follow-up with families in order to maintain and adhere to agency attendance policy and other activities as required/assigned by contract or program;
  • Encourage parent engagement and support planning of parent meetings, field trips, and other agency events;
  • Develop and implement educational plans and activities to meet each individual family's needs according to the Parents as Teachers model;
  • Work with families on scheduled weekly home visits in their homes or agreed location for at least 90 minutes and during bi-monthly group socialization activities with all families;
  • Assist parents in developing and enhancing positive parenting skills, helping them become the primary family educators for their children and reinforcing this concept with practical suggestions for its development;
  • Administer and interpret assessment tools to assigned children within the required period, maintaining detailed and written documentation through various tools;
  • Document and interpret children's growth through various tools;
  • Utilize developmental screening tools to determine individual needs of children and assist in individualizing curriculum;
  • Assist parents in identifying and fully utilizing available community resources; utilizes the assistance of the Family Support Specialists and other agency staff and professionals to refer parents as needed; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Applicants for the position of Home Visitor shall possess a minimum of an AA for (EHS/HS) or B.A./B.S. for (PI) in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development fields. AA or B.A./B.S. degree attained in other fields must include credits in ECE/Child Development that are equivalent to a major (minimum 36 credits) in the field.
  • Communicate effectively with and relate to diverse internal and external constituents;
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to listen to people, understand the issues, respond appropriately, and bring issues to successful conclusion;
  • Ability to resolve problems, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure; and
  • Must have valid driver's license, current insurance and have access to a reliable vehicle.
