To realize our dream of building a next-generation organism company, each of our organisms needs to be successfully deployed. Ensuring that the deployed product reproducibly meets customer and market specification in an economically viable process is critical to Ginkgo's success. Therefore, we're seeking a Process Engineer to help tackle this ambitious challenge. With your passion for process development, and a particular interest in downstream product recovery and purification, you'll help to design, develop, and deploy product recovery and purification processes for a variety of products across several scales and sites.
As a Process Engineer you will work on a variety of Downstream Processes designed to purify, separate and scale products from fermentation broth and/or cell culture spanning multiple industries in service of the diverse customer portfolio of Ginkgo Bioworks. The role will be a lab-focused role utilizing model driven experimentation and centered on project/experiment execution.
Responsibilities
- Design and perform bench scale assays and proof-of-concept experiments
- Clean and maintain equipment & lab glassware
- Design & develop scalable processes that can be transferred to commercial scales
- Collaborate and coordinate with Ginkgo's fermentation, upstream Process Engineering (USP), Downstream Process Engineering (DSP), QA/QC program and Alliance Management teams to successfully deliver products & processes to customers that leverage Ginkgo's engineered organisms
- Lead and scope Process Engineering and scale up projects
- Maintain the process laboratory in an organized and safe manner
- Curate, collate, summarize, and organize experimental data
- Perform literature reviews and summarize relevant topics for active work streams
- Assist with building computational models for new processes
Minimum Requirements
- BS/MS in a STEM field and minimum 2 years years of related experience post-bachelor's degree in an industrial setting; an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience
Preferred Capabilities and Experience
- Biotechnology process development experience
- Experience designing and running methods on Tecan Fluent® and AKTA chromatography instruments
- Enthusiasm for hands-on experimentation
- Willingness and enthusiasm to work in a laboratory setting
- Strong attention to detail and level of efficiency with laboratory work
- Understanding of product separation basics from fermentation broth
- Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment, and balance multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent communication, problem solving, and data analysis skills
- Knowledge or exposure to the following programs & fields: Superpro, JMP, Excel VBA
