Dod Skillbridge - Machinist (Active Duty Military Only)

Through DoD SkillBridge and Hiring Our Heroes, Sierra Nevada Corporation provides internships to service members transitioning to the civilian workforce. These internships include up to six months of on-the-job training for eligible service members. During this time, participants gain valuable work experience in the civilian sector and build professional networks as they prepare for their transition to full-time civilian work.
SNC's Special Programs team is seeking a skilled and highly motivated CNC Programmer/Machinist to join the team and contribute to the mission of Special Programs and the larger MST business area.
Our Prototype Machine Shop is the backbone behind our Quick Reaction Capabilities and provides quick turn parts to support a wide range of prototyping and development work across the enterprise. While machined parts are the majority of the Prototype Machine Shop's offerings; light sheet metal fabrication and sub-assembly work regularly come through as urgent priorities that the Prototype Machine Shop will support.
As a CNC Programmer/Machinist, the team will look to you to machine simple to complex and critical components to meet engineering objectives. The work fast paced and priorities shift regularly as support of the program and customers is always evolving. The role will require that you lead by example, possess a tenacious spirit and are self starter. The Special Programs team will rely on your expertise and professionalism to positively impact and support both internal and external customers.
The Mission Solutions and Technologies (MST) business area provides affordable, turn-key command/control, communications, integrated ISR, force protection and security solutions worldwide. Responsibilities Include:

• Program, setup and run 3-axis vertical CNC Mill in a low-volume, high-mix workflow
• Work closely with engineers to provide crucial input on design for manufacturability
• Cut material, build tooling, set fixtures, prove and run programs, deburr and finish parts
• Machine complex components to tight tolerances in various materials with tight deadlines
• Use various inspection and measurement tools to validate your work
• Tracking and documentation of machining processes and results when necessary
• Provide feedback to engineers on design and process improvement
• Work as a team by openly collaborating with engineers and fellow team members
• Proactively communicate with engineers, management, and other team members through verbal, email, text, phone and other internal electronic communications
• Perform all assignments in accordance with EH&S and security policies

Must-haves:

• Currently serving as Active Duty Military and be eligible to participate in the DoD SkillBridge program
• High school diploma or GED equivalent and typically 2 or more years of relevant experience
  • A higher-level degree may substitute for experience
  • Related experience may be considered in lieu of required education

• Basic understanding of machining techniques
• Experience with machining tools and equipment
• Familiarity with Computer Aided Engineering tools
• Ability to identify and procure effective tooling and work-holding solutions
• Knowledge and understanding of engineering drawings, documents and familiarity with GD&T
• Competent in the use of measurement and inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauge pins, bore gauges, optical comparator, etc.
• Excellent attention to detail
• Excellent analytical and mathematical skills
• Ability to remain positive and focused in demanding and stressful situations
• Familiarity with working in multi-disciplinary development and prototyping teams
• The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. Security Clearance is required

Preferred:

• 2+ years of CNC mill programming experience
• Proficiency with CAM programming in CAMWorks
• Experience with Solidworks or other 3D Modeling software
• Thorough knowledge of interpreting Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5
• Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry, the US Department of Defense or US Military
