POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for lab organization and coordination, in addition to conducting GMO tests in corn for transgene purity, adventitious presence (AP), zygosity analyses, and other DNA testing methods.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Organize lab projects and samples for sample preparation and DNA extraction
• Set up and conduct lab experiments per contract and protocols specific to the required GMO AP and zygosity targets
• Data collection, data quality assessment and analysis
• Maintain seed and leaf sample inventory
• Exercise routine lab duties such as inventorying, purchasing and organizing chemicals, chemical stock preparation, safety labeling of hazardous materials and lab waste disposal
• Keep accurate lab notes and organize files for QMS audit involving protocols, equipment, chemical and lab safety information
• Provide training to new lab associates/helpers as required
• Assist in technical evaluation and implementation of new lab equipment and platforms, assays and SOPs
• Coordinate employees in daily tasks associated with DNA testing
• Coordinate testing demands from Operations and Research
• Participate in and contribute to the joint research and operations efforts at the QA Lab
• Actively Participate in the QA Lab safety programs
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor of Science in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or related field
• One (1) to three (3) years’ experience
• Demonstrated understanding of application of molecular technology in corn breeding
• Previous experience of working in DNA labs, particularly with GMO QC testing programs

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of corn commercial transgenic events and the associated QC requirements for AP and zygosity testing
• Common DNA lab skills such as DNA extraction, PCR setup for qualitative and quantitative analysis
• Experience working with high-throughput lab platforms in DNA extraction and PCR analysis
• Excellent organizational and record keeping skills
• Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Expertise with MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and common PC-based software. Ability to use and develop Excel macros for complex data analyses.
• Ability to learn equipment specific software.

PHYSICAL/OTHER DEMANDS:

• Ability to work required peak hours
• Ability to lift up to 50 lb.
• Must have valid driver’s license and meet MVR Requirements
