Job description

POSITION: District Elementary Social Studies/ScienceContent Specialist 
 
Terms of Employment:  10 Month Employee - with opportunity for summer days as well (temporary if hired after August 28, 2023)
 
Salary:  Current Teacher Salary Schedule 
 
LOCATION: District Office supporting Capital Schools
 
GOAL:  Support teaching and learning in the Capital School District to increase student mastery of the NGSS Science Standards and Delaware Recommended Social Studies Standards
 
PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide job embedded coaching support in the areas of science and social studies including integration of blended learning practices (i.e., co-planning, co-teaching, modeling lessons, data collection and analysis, and participation in feedback sessions)
  • Support the selection, piloting and implementation of core content materials in Science and Social Studies K-5 including working closely with classroom teachers to support instruction
  • Support coordination and implementation of professional learning experiences, professional learning communities (PLC's), and lesson planning 
  • Manage and update Schoology Curriculum group for K-5 in the areas of Science and Social Studies (i.e., placing curriculum guides, pacing guides, assessments, documents for science and social studies curriculum, NGSS background documents and other pertinent content materials)
  • Collaborate with other district coaches to plan and implement professional development and engage in district planning committees during school hours and afterschool
  • Use and demonstrate technology tools and applications effectively to support instruction
  • Participate and/or facilitate Science and Social Studies PLCs across elementary K-5
  • Use the Delaware WIMS system or applicable format to order Science kits for K-5, manage work orders, and coordinate science kit delivery and pick up
  • Utilize data to identify strengths and areas of need in relation to science and social studies; support teachers with collecting and analyzing content area data to plan for instruction
  • Promote the use of content area literacy practices in science and social studies classrooms K-5
  • Participate in state level cadre sessions and communicate out content information, training dates, and updates to curriculum programs and resources. Maintain records for those teachers that are trained in their various curriculum levels.
  • Coordinate with district curriculum and payroll staff to prepare documents and submit stipends for Science leads (K-5) and other content related trainings
  • Monitor planetarium maintenance and prepare shows in planetarium for the district
  • Regular communication with lead science and social studies teachers to help guide them with work at their schools
  • Participate in walkthroughs across buildings in the district to support science and social studies learning
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, instruction and assessments, data analysis and input, and engage in ongoing curriculum development, revision and alignment
  • Participate in ongoing training in the area of Science and Social Studies; conduct or attend assigned after school meetings
  • Work closely with DOE to share content area opportunities including STEM workshops, applications for content area projects, teacher nominations for Presidential Awards, field test development, and any other state opportunities available for various grade levels
  • Ensure all teachers have the necessary teaching materials for science and social studies instruction (to include sending materials to the copy center, updating in Schoology, etc.)
  • Provide school-based support for teachers and teams of teachers to implement standards-based instruction to meet the needs of all learners to include students with disabilities, English Learners and students who are identified as gifted learners.
  • Monitor science safety and program compliance, share safety contracts and provide safety training to all science staff; safety supply purchases-including OSHA and other program required items
  • Support development and implementation of dynamic assessments/rubrics/lesson plans designed to support all students including those with disabilities, English Learners, and gifted learners served in the science and social studies classrooms
  • Participate in statewide professional development projects as assigned.
  • Any other duties as assigned  
  • Assist building test coordinators with DeSSA Through-Year Assessments including training, support, implementation, and reporting 
  • Engage in equity work as it pertains to Science and Social Studies including collecting and organizing and updating information in relation to the district's HB 198 plan
  • Serve as the lead facilitator for the Library Media Specialists and Gifted Teachers
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of excellent teaching experience in elementary science/social studies 
  • Master's degree preferred from an accredited college/university 
  • Experience with integration of technology to support blended learning
  • Successful experience as a teacher leader at the building/district level
Optional Qualifications:
  • Certification or coursework in content area literacy instruction
  • Advanced coursework in science or social studies content
