Description
Under general direction to supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing public safety dispatch services; performs a variety of technical tasks related to assigned area; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures. Exercises direct supervision over dispatch staff.
Examples of Duties
- Supervises, assigns work, trains, and evaluates the work of dispatch staff;
- Recommends and assists in the implementation of policies, goals, and objectives for public safety communication;
- Evaluates operations and activities of assigned area and recommends improvements;
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures;
- Participates in the selection of staff, provides and coordinates training, works with staff to correct deficiencies, and implements discipline;
- Receives 911 calls and gathers required information, provides information to callers, and routes calls;
- Coordinates emergency calls and relays requests, questions, or information from personnel in the field to the Watch Commander;
- Resolves complaints in a timely and efficient manner;
- Operates a variety of dispatch equipment included computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, automated telephone system, and 800MHZ radio system;
- Works with allied agencies and coordinates dispatching of major calls; ensures priority information is being transmitted and communicated with allied agencies;
- Performs a wide variety of administrative duties, including maintaining documents related to public safety activities;
- Prepares reports and other correspondence; and
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Experience:
- Four years experience involving duties as a primary operator or supervisor for emergency services with a public agency.
- Experience as a Communications Training Officer in the Public Safety environment is highly desirable.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Equivalent to an Associate's degree with major course in management, police administration, police science, or a related field is highly desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Possess and maintain a valid Class C driver's license.
- Possession of POST Dispatcher/Telecommunications certificate.
Special Requirements:
Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
- Ability to work in a standard office environment;
- Ability to type at a speed necessary for successful job performance;
- Ability to sit for long periods of time;
- Ability to work in an enclosed environment with limited mobility;
- Availability for shift work.
