Description
The Discovery Coordinator for the criminal division is responsible for conducting legal research; drafting briefs and charging documents; and handling dissemination of discovery to ensure statutory obligations are met. The work is performed under the general direction of the Discovery Supervisor and the Chief Deputy County Attorney.
Examples of Duties
- Primary support staff position for discovery dissemination and criminal litigation;
- Receives, organizes, and distributes all criminal justice information (discovery) to defense attorneys and courts in a timely manner;
- Conducts legal research (Westlaw/Lexis proficiency) for legal staff from codes, digests and other legal publications and periodicals;
- Prepares and drafts legal documents including responsive briefs, charging documents, and substantive motions making legal determinations based on discovery review;
- Assists attorneys in legal matters related to discovery obtained by law enforcement;
- Reviews and edits documents for compliance with statutes, court decisions and other legal authorities;
- Anticipates missing discovery based on file reviews and requests missing discovery from appropriate agency;
- Obtains and disseminates additional investigative information as appropriate without direction.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience/Training:
- Bachelor's Degree or certificate in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, or closely related field; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training totaling four (4) years.
- Notary Public within six (6) month probationary period, if applicable;
- Possession of a valid Montana driver's license.
- Preference will be given to applicants with professional experience in Federal and State Court Criminal Prosecution.
- PACE Certification (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam Credentialing); or
- NALA CP Certification (National Association of Legal Assistants Certified Paralegal); or
- NALA ACP Certification (National Association of Legal Assistants Advanced Certified Paralegal). Note: The NALA CP Certification was formerly known as the NALA CLA - Center for Legal Studies
