We are seeking a Director, Publishing Innovation and Open Sciencetoplay a pivotal enterprise role in the transformation of our publishing models, business operations, and culture to one that is focused on Open Science and stewardship, while modeling AIP Publishing's cultural principles: Progressive; Researcher-Focused; Experimental; Equitable; Authentic; Action-Oriented; and Collaborative

The Director, Publishing Innovation and Open Science, reporting to the Chief Publishing Officer will work across the organization to develop and introduce innovative and equitable Open Science publishing models in our journals and other products that accelerate the advancement of science while serving researchers. S/he will play a vital role in shaping the broader conversation advancing Open Science, both at AIP Publishing and externally with researchers, funders, publishers, and other organizations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Open Science ideation and implementation

  • Work with customer insight team to lead research and inquiry into innovative Open Science practices that serve the research community.
  • Lead and facilitate experimentation and implementation of new publishing and business strategies that promote Open Science, in existing or new journals and products.
  • Ensure longer-term sustainability for successful Open Science and Publishing Innovation through development of funding/sponsorship or business models.
  • Lead development of Open Science policies and practices that align with our mission and strategy.

Knowledge and relationship building

  • Cultivate cross-functional relationships across the organization in service to our Open Science mission. Engage as an internal advocate in AIP Publishing's transformation toward Open Science.
  • Share insights and best practices for Open Science engagement across the organization.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, Open Science, and competitor activities.
  • Foster partnerships with institutions, funders, and industry organizations to promote Open Science experimentation, new publishing models, and wider reach and impact of publications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A demonstrated passion for Open Science and for making research communication transparent, equitable, reproducible, and rigorous.
  • Long-term strategic view, a keen eye for emerging trends, and the ability to synthesize diverse and abstract ideas into meaningful outcomes.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

To thrive in this role, you should meet the following qualifications:

  • Significant experience (8+ years) working in the scholarly publishing industry, with a strong focus on Open Science practices and publishing models. Your deep understanding of the scholarly communications and research landscape and evolving industry trends will enable you to drive meaningful change.
  • Preferred: An advanced degree in a physical sciences or related field. Your educational background will provide you with subject matter expertise and a comprehensive understanding of the scientific research landscape, enabling you to effectively engage with researchers and make informed decisions.

$137,000 - $175,000

Salary within the above posted range is based on a variety of factors including relevant experience.

To be considered candidates must reside within NY, NJ, CT, MD, VA, PA, MA, RI or Washington, DC. This is a remote first plus convening opportunity.
