- On Call Requirements: Supports 24/7 departments
- Required Travel: Supports Evanston, Skokie and Swedish Hospital. Travel between sites is a requirement of the role
Job Summary:
Director Patient Access Hospital Registration has operational and functional responsibility for the Patient Access functions across assigned hospitals and off-site locations. This position is charged with leading Hospital Registration and revenue cycle initiatives, including registration, precertification, patient movement, payment collection, and other related patient facing areas of the hospitals, to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and consistency in the Patient Access experience. The position works in collaboration with Hospital leadership, Revenue Cycle and Patient Access leadership, Compliance, Contracting, HIT, and clinical leaders to ensure continuous improvements to delivering care for our patients. Reports to the Vice President of Patient Access Registration and Financial Clearance.
What you will do:
- Leads all Hospital Registration initiatives and activities related to ER, Central Registration, Admitting, Insurance Verification and Ambulatory Surgery workflows for assigned hospital and off-site facilities. Is a resource to all locations for Registration related activities throughout the assigned locations. Includes but is not limited to developing region-wide and site-specific workflows, troubleshooting system issues, and testing new functionality. .
- Acts as the contact for Hospital Leadership and clinical departments for assigned hospital locations.
- Collaborates with leadership team to ensure employee engagement and leads initiatives to retain staff and create a positive work environment.
- Meets regularly with management team to review performance, identify areas of opportunity, and ensure consistency across sites. Develops managers to expand their skills and knowledge.
- Develops and assures successful implementation of highly efficient and effective Patient Access management strategies
- Evaluates technology solutions to support Patient Access and create efficiencies, including Epic enhancements, Experian Eligibility, Phynd. Monitors trends in the industry for new opportunities for efficiency and best practice. Manages operations based on data and metrics, consistently meeting assigned targets
- Continually reviews and analyzes the operations of the Patient Access Areas, ensuring that staff are providing efficient and quality delivery of services while productivity targets are achieved. Works closely with HIT and Epic to ensure functionality meets the needs of the organization and locations supported to achieve maximum efficiency and patient satisfaction
- Analyzes operation of the system; Creates, maintains, and updates policies and procedures to reflect current operations and to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Shares and communicates complex processes and information at a level of understanding for the appropriate relevant recipients
- Develop and enhance positive working relationships with all levels of revenue cycle staff within the health system. Works with other directors to ensure process coordination and quality Patient Access to service is maintained.
- Is available on-call, outside of normal business hours
- Works in collaboration with Epic training team and Business Operations team on all workflow changes and training curriculum to ensure staff have access to up to date current information
- Assist VP in the development and management of departmental budgets. Seeks opportunities to reduce costs and increase efficiency without compromising patient care or revenue and reimbursement. Manages supplies and expenses within the allocated budget guidelines
- Recommends and implements tools and processes to improve the patient experience, while maintaining accuracy and ensuring data integrity.
- Other duties as assigned when necessary to maintain efficient operations of the financial clearance departments and of NorthShore as a whole
What you will need:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or related fields, or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree preferred
- Certification: N/A
- Experience: Minimum 7 years’ experience in the management of hospital Patient Access, pre-authorization and financial clearance staff and processes, or 7 years’ experience in a revenue cycle management role
- Unique or Preferred Skills:
- Epic Experience/Certification preferred
- Demonstrated experience with knowledge of all government and commercial payor requirements in hospital and clinic settings, to ensure timely verification of coverage, authorization for medically necessary care and prescribed medications.
- Strong analytical skills; able to read, understand and analyze complex data and to generate and present interpretive reporting.
- Solid track record of building strong, collaborative relationships with clinical department partners, medical staff and leadership
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must have the ability to work with a team, assess needs and make recommendations
Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires light physical effort. May require frequent periods of standing or walking.
- May require frequent lifting or moving of lightweight material.
- Ability to multi-task in a high stress fast paced operation with patient, patient’s family and physician waiting for response
