Director of Technology Job Description

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Overall responsibility for the efficient operation of the Information Technology Department. This position description does not express or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the incumbents in this position. The employee will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and perform other job-related duties requested by the Superintendent.

Directs the Information Technology Department for a medium sized school district (900 employees/6,000 students). Possess the ability to lead a team of professionals in providing technology aligned with the district's strategic plan, the technology plan, curriculum standards and administrative operations. Experience in effective approaches for educational and administrative technology. Oversee the integration of Technology into all curriculum areas.

Strong technical background in design and application of Technology systems, including Wide Area Networks (WAN), Local Area Networks (LAN), administrative and classroom technology, workstation and server management, database management and reporting, system integration and administrative software necessary to operate a public school district. Oversees the district's Student Information System (SIS). Responsible for management of district security infrastructure, to include alarms, access control, and video surveillance. Commitment to professional skill and leadership development. Prepare the annual technology budget.

Maintains the district's website. The point of contact and coordinates the district's participation in the Universal Service Program (E-Rate). Provide continuous coordination and evaluation of district-wide technology programs and systems. Serve as a member of the Building Committee, responsible for technology integration in ongoing building construction projects. Requires an IS degree or equivalent education/experience and 7 or more years of successful IS/IT experience preferred. Supervises Systems Administrators and Student Data Manager Reports to the Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in the execution of the 5-year technology plan by implementing the vision and roadmap effectively and efficiently, ensuring technology infrastructure, staffing and support are reliable and available for all constituencies.

  • Lead the district in implementing a process for identifying, approving, acquiring, and implementing new technologies to support student learning and educator effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Evaluate new and current technology systems and applications and provide recommendations for hardware and software in response to the organization's needs.
  • Make technology widely and seamlessly available for all students by enabling and executing learning goals to provide every student regular, reliable, and easy access to technology.
  • Leverage student expertise in the support of educational and technical programs,

including user-support.

  • Use technology to increase communication and collaboration within the school district and between the school district and the community by use of high quality digital messaging, social computing/networks, effective, current and consistent websites, and an efficient process of online student/family registration.
  • Provide leadership regarding all district wide technology issues and consult with appropriate administrative personnel in devising, developing and implementing long-term and short-term technology goals.
  • Facilitate district building construction projects, responsible for all facets of Technology

integration throughout all stages of construction to ownership.

  • Lead the yearly review and update of the district's 5-year technology plan.
  • Develop, monitor and make recommendations for the technology budget.
  • Provide IT staff with information on the availability of existing and emerging technologies in support of their mission in the organization, including-facilitating technology staff meetings and participating on various committees as needed.
  • Hire and evaluate IT employees assigned to the technology department.
  • Supervise the work and procedures of the technology department including establishing procedural strategies for effective and efficient end-user support.
  • Devise, develop, implement and maintain systems of internal controls, emergency and backup procedures, proper licensing, system upgrades, and disaster recovery plans to insure integrity of information, security of databases, and internal network access control.
  • Assist in design and development of marketing strategies with regard to technology projects.
  • Communicate with special education field staff regarding new developments in adaptive technologies.
  • Communicate regularly with all constituents regarding planning and support.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities by attending and/or presenting at state and/or nation meetings, and other relevant technology-related events.
  • Participate in the research of and application for various technology-related grants or revenue sources to support technology-related projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to draft clear and concise correspondence.
  • Ability to compose and/or present written or oral reports as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Bachelor degree preferred
  • Must have active listening and decision-making skills
  • Must be highly motivated and enthusiastic with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and proficiently in English both orally and in writing using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Must be proficient with networking, systems administration, software engineering, and database management.

The employee must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting, and/or moving light objects up to ten (10) lbs., and occasionally lift items slightly over ten (10) lbs. The use of a step stool may be required to reach the top drawer of a filing cabinet as necessary. Specific vision abilities include close vision and color vision.
