Job description

At Shipt, we are transforming the grocery shopping experience and giving time back to consumers. Shipt shoppers handpick fresh groceries and household essentials, then deliver them to your door in as little as one hour.
Are you an experienced Government Affairs professional with expertise in navigating in and around state capitols and city halls? Do you have a strong understanding of the app-based economy, and the opportunities that it offers to hundreds of thousands of Americans each year? Do you have proven experience navigating labor issues, advocating for organizations and moving the needle on policy and legislation? Then let’s talk.
At Shipt, we are transforming the shopping experience and giving time back to consumers. But, we’re more than a company that brings groceries and household essentials from the store to your door. More importantly, we are a purpose-driven company rooted in the belief that every person counts and that we are in a unique position to help spark connections between people across the country.
Shipt is looking for a Director of State Government Affairs to oversee California and the West region of the country reporting to the Vice President of Government Affairs. This role will direct Shipt’s State Government Affairs strategy and manage consultants and lobbyists in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
Your Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement a state advocacy approach that leverages outside consulting and lobbying teams to proactively position Shipt across multiple audiences within the CA and West region.
  • Advocate on behalf of Shipt in state capitols and city halls, with staff, agencies, associations and stakeholders.
  • Advise on and influence policies and legislation that will benefit Shipt customers, shoppers and retail partners.
  • Manage relationships with trade associations, membership organizations, and industry partners
  • Communicate (both verbally and written) the impact to Shipt of proposed and pending legislation/regulations to both policymakers and stakeholders.
  • Provide public officials with timely information (both responsive and proactive) regarding Shipt's public policy positions, business operations, and innovation initiatives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on Shipt's Government Affairs team to advance company priorities.
  • Establish strong relationships with key internal partners to develop a deep knowledge of the business, enabling you to advocate on Shipt's behalf.
  • Partner with senior leadership and key partners in legal, operations and human resources to craft and execute a State Government Affairs program, ensuring key external stakeholders appreciate and understand the Shipt model.
  • Advise on potential reputational implications and mitigate risk.
  • Partner closely with the Government Affairs team at Target–Shipt's parent company–on policy issues, industry connections, and areas of joint interest.
  • Develop subject matter expertise on a wide range of policy issues, such as labor, future of work, transportation, food and product safety, and provide insightful analysis on those issues with internal business partners.
  • Provide company leaders with opportunities to develop relationships with elected officials by coordinating visits, tours, and attendance at events.
Requirements:
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience
  • 6-10 years of experience in policy, Government Affairs, lobbying or advocacy work
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven track record building policy programs that achieve results
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Experience working with an app-based company and/or labor experience preferred
Work Arrangement:
Shipt considers candidates located near a Shipt office or workspace in Birmingham, San Francisco, or Minneapolis to be hybrid, which means that they have the flexibility to work from home (with leader approval) or at a Shipt office in order to facilitate the ability to innovate, collaborate, and spark team connections. In-office expectations will vary by role and leader. Certain roles may require in-office presence on a full-time basis. Please work with your recruiter to learn more about the classification of this role.
