Senior Director, Head of US Federal Government Affairs

Location: Washington, D.C.

Introduction to role:

Are you ready to make a difference? At AstraZeneca, we put patients first and strive to meet their unmet needs worldwide. We're looking for a Senior Director, Head of US Federal Government Affairs, who is swift to action, confident to lead, willing to collaborate, and curious about what science can do. This role is a key part of our Biopharmaceuticals Business Unit, where we reimagine the patient journey and bring it to life. If you're ready to focus on the whole patient journey, identifying any pain points for patients and working to solve them, then you’re our kind of person.

Accountabilities:

As the Sr. Director, US Federal Government Affairs, you will be a member of the US Federal Government Affairs and Policy team, which drives the company’s policy agenda in Congress. You will strategically lead in the advancement of the company’s business priorities on Capitol Hill and defend the enterprise against harmful policy proposals. This role will lead other Government Affairs professionals that are accountable for achieving proactive engagements in order to progress company’s priorities. This role will be known as an expert internally and externally in proactively driving business priorities. This role will successfully work collaboratively with internal, cross-functional teams and skillfully navigate the external government landscape.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelors degree required
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience in public policy, public affairs, Government Affairs, public health, vaccines policy, or issues management
  • Experience juggling multiple priorities and deadlines with urgency
  • Understanding of and experience working with or adjacent to the pharma sector
  • Expertise in distilling sophisticated policy concepts into plain language
  • Skilled at managing cross-functional partner relations in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work on both strategy and execution
  • Deep understanding of the federal/state legislative and regulations process
  • Experience in leading projects and teams directly or indirectly

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Advanced degree such as a J.D., M.P.P. or M.P.H.
  • An understanding of the drug reimbursement process, including both US commercial and public payors
  • Experience with the intersection of public health and medicine
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed organization
  • Experience working on Capitol Hill, at a Federal agency or at The White House
  • Experience as people manager

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That’s why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. But that doesn't mean we’re not flexible. We balance the expectation of being in the office while respecting individual flexibility. Join us in our unique and ambitious world.
