TITLE:Director of Operations
LOCATION: New York, NY (Lower East Side)
REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer
SCHEDULE: Onsite M-F, generally 9-5, some evenings and weekends as needed
SALARY: $125-$135 commensurate with experience + excellent benefits

OVERVIEW:

Grand St. Settlement (GSS) seeks an entrepreneurial and motivated Director of Operations (DOO). DOO works closely with the CEO, COO and the Exec Team in strategic planning for development community center services and facility expansions. The ideal candidate is excited to join a growing organization and is entrepreneurial. DOO will be overseeing the day-to-day operations of facilities, maintenance, and security at two of our Lower East Side community centers (80 Pitt St., 175 Delancey St./168 Broome St. @Essex Crossing). DOO will take the leadership role in renovations and upgrading community centers, child care centers and program facilities in communities of high need and will be the primary leader to redesign and retrofit the community centers to respond to the community needs throughout NYC.

Grand St. Settlement is growing and expanding programs to respond to the needs of the community families. The DOO will be a critical player to coordinate and ignite positive growth, take leadership on many exciting projects to expand program services to communities that are lacking high quality programs for children and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Management of GSS Community Centers

  • Manage and supervise Facilities Manager at 80 Pitt St. Community Center and 175 Delancey St./168 Broome St. Essex Crossing Community Center (ECCC, 1st fl & 4th fl).
  • Coordinate weekly and weekend space use at 80 Pitt St. and 175 Delancey St.
  • Manage space rentals and events at 80 Pitt St. and 175 Delancey St. including space usage/ co location agreements
  • Coordinate the building maintenance for the Early Childhood, Youth, Social Services, and Older Adult Services.
  • Proactively establish and nurture strong lines of communication with community partners, including local NYPD precincts, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), community boards, elected officials, local non-profit leaders and other neighborhood stakeholders.
  • Monitor, and manage the site's service contracts (e.g., utilities, building systems, copiers, telephones, furniture, storage rentals, etc.).
  • Coordinate and manage all building systems' testing, installation, warranty, training, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance to ensure that all systems are working to full capacity.
  • Liaise with insurance brokers and handle legal inquiries.
  • Assist to develop and implement an agency-wide purchasing and procurement plan.
  • Assist to develop and implement site-specific security and safety plans.
  • Assist to develop and implement emergency and evacuation plans.
  • Assist to develop and implement an organized inventory and record of facility needs, maintenance logs, keys, furniture, and equipment.

Community Center/Space Renovations and Development
  • Supports the development and execution long-term and short-term strategic plans to expand and renovate facilities to respond to the needs of the communities.

  • Develops strategic planning to build-out community centers, child care centers and program spaces to deliver services.
  • In partnership with the CEO, COO and the Exec Team to develop business cases for strategic initiatives and develop facilities to support the mission.
  • Partner with the Exec Team to identify and evaluates program spaces and partnerships opportunities for program management to deliver services
  • Assesses and mitigates risks associated with strategic space initiatives, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices.
  • Takes the lead to analyze operation cases, financial data, including budgets and forecasts to make informed decisions about program growth and resource allocations.
  • Collaborates with senior management, department heads, and external partners to align program and facility strategies with GSS’ overall vision and goals.
  • Drives innovation and operational process improvement to optimize operations, reduce costs, and enhance participant experience. Supports the Exec Team planning, execution, and evaluation of strategic projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Presents strategic space renovation plans, progress updates, and recommendations to the executive team in a clear and concise manner.
  • Special assignments and projects as needed.

Education + Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, Business, Policy, or Economics preferred.
  • Must be an excellent writer and proofreader, highly organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Experience in customer service, event planning, scheduling, community relations, purchasing, inventory management, facility management, building maintenance, and/or marketing is a plus.
  • Experience in supervision of staff, custodial and front desk security support
  • Experience in coordination of renovations to improve community centers and project management
