Since 1948, The Rescue Mission of Roanoke has been on the mission of Helping Hurting People in Jesus Name. The Mission nourishes the mind, body, and spirit, through dedicated team members and volunteers that extend the compassion of Christ to our neighbors in need.

The Director of OperationsServes as a mission-focused, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling an organization, leading effective teams, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. Must be a servant leader who is able to help others at the Rescue Mission deliver measurable, cost-effective results that make the vision a reality. This includes the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to the Mission. Oversees Food Services, Pantry, Facility Services, IT, Systems and Data needs. Special projects as assigned and may take on additional areas of responsibility as this role becomes fully established.
Reports to: CEO
Hours of Availability: Monday Friday; weekends as needed
Compensation: DOE (Exempt/ Salary)

Education/Experience:

  • BS/BA in management, finance, human resources or other business-related field or an equivalent amount of experience and training.
  • Preferably, at least five years of progressively responsible leadership level experience that includes management experience at the high levels.
  • Demonstrated and consistent engagement in community service in leadership capacities.

Competencies exhibited while creating a Christ-centered environment:

  1. Servant Leadership
    1. Serves as overseer of Food Services and Pantry teams to provide healthy, delicious, nutritious meals and food options.
    2. Develop and maintain external partnerships to include stakeholders, and donors in a professional, engaging way that encourages support of the Rescue Mission, removes barriers and encourages lasting relationships.
    3. Build relationships with shelter guests and program participants that provide volunteer engagement, personal and professional growth.
    4. Work in close collaborative partnership with Programs including Shelter Services, Recovery, Clinic, Guest Development/Case Management, Chaplains and Human Resources to promote a culture of wellness and recovery through Christ.

  1. Strategic Project Management
    1. Leads special projects that have wide organizational and community impact to elevate the overall work and effectiveness of the Rescue Mission.
    2. Ensure campus buildings, grounds and offsite facilities are clean, bright, and safe, creating spaces that are conductive to the transformative work of the Rescue Mission.
    3. Analyze the current technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of information technology, reporting and financial systems that support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall.

  1. Business Acumen
    1. Serve as data oversight for Key Performance Measures and Organizational Goals that creates timely reporting from Mission teams and supports analysis for decision making and communications.
    2. Serves on Finance Board of Directors as an active participant.
    3. Utilize process improvement to lead efforts over logistics, systems and technology in a way that removes barriers and enhances organizational effectiveness.
  2. Safety Responsibility
    1. Safety is everyones responsibility
    2. Be aware of safety/security concerns and report to the appropriate person(s).
    3. Assist with conflict resolution among clients, team members and volunteers according to established procedures

  1. Volunteer Engagement: A strategy that builds the capacity of Rescue Mission through employee and volunteer partnership. It is built on the development and implementation of high-impact, meaningful volunteer opportunities that create positive outcomes for the organization and the volunteer.

All team members may be asked to complete other duties as assigned by the leadership/management with an expectation to complete these assignments as requested.

  • Noise levels may vary depending on activity/event and/or location
  • Consistently - Communicating with others to exchange information
  • Frequent - Moving around to accomplish a task
