Director of New Business Development – Zero Emission Transportation

About The Role:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of New Business Development with a focus on Medium- and Heavy-Duty (MHD) zero-Emission Transportation. This role is pivotal in driving the growth of CALSTART’s initiatives by identifying and securing federal and state funding opportunities. The ideal candidate will have a robust understanding of the clean transportation landscape, proven experience in Business Development, and a strong network within federal and state government agencies.
This role reports into the Vice President, Trucks & Off Road.
What You'll Do:
Develop and implement strategies for securing funding, identifying new opportunities, leading proposals, building stakeholder relationships, advocating policies, collaborating on projects
Strategic Planning and Execution:
Develop and implement strategies to secure federal and state funding for MHD zero-Emission Transportation projects
Identify New Business opportunities and partnerships to advance CALSTART’s mission
Lead the creation of proposals, grant applications, and Business Development plans
Federal and State Funding:
Monitor and analyze federal and state funding opportunities, including grants, subsidies, and other financial incentives
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in government agencies, including the Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and state-level counterparts
Advocate for policies and funding programs that support the growth of zero-Emission Transportation
Partnership Development:
Establish and nurture relationships with industry stakeholders, including vehicle manufacturers, technology providers, fleet operators, and other key players in the zero-Emission Transportation sector
Collaborate with partners to develop joint proposals and projects that align with CALSTART’s goals
Leadership and Team Collaboration:
Lead and mentor a team of Business Development professionals
Work closely with other CALSTART teams, including Policy, Programs, and Communications, to ensure alignment and maximize impact
Represent CALSTART at industry conferences, workshops, and meetings
Reporting and Performance Tracking:
Develop and maintain systems for tracking funding opportunities, proposal submissions, and project outcomes
Provide regular reports to senior management on Business Development activities and achievements
What You'll Bring To The Table:
Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in Business Development, with a focus on government funding and clean transportation
Proven track record of securing significant federal and state funding
Strong knowledge of zero-Emission Transportation technologies and market trends.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
Ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners
Strategic thinker with the ability to execute plans effectively
Passion for clean transportation and environmental sustainability
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Environmental Science, or a related field
Desired Qualifications:
Master’s degree
Truck & or Off Road EV experience
$117,260 - $140,712 a year

We determine pay based on several factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, qualifications, experience, education, internal equity and other factors relevant to the job.
