Job Title: Director of Finance and Operations FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Chief of Partnerships and Operations
Background
Chicago CRED is a mission driven organization working to achieve transformational reductions in violence in Chicago. CRED does its work by offering direct services to those who are at the highest risk of violence, advocating for policy reform to increase public investment into community violence interventions (CVI) and reform public health systems that are not responsive to community conditions, and promoting cross-sector capacity building to achieve maximum impact.
Department and Role Function
Reporting to the Chief of Partnerships and Operations, the Director of Finance and Operations works collaboratively with Chicago CRED’s senior management and entire team to help achieve its mission of lowering gun violence in Chicago. The Director of Finance and Operations will be primarily responsible for management of all Finance and Corporate/Administrative functions for Chicago CRED a 501c3. The Director will supervise a team of four individuals, currently comprised of a Senior Manager of Finance and Operations, Senior Accountant, IT Manager, and Accounts Payable Specialist.
The Director of Finance and Operations must be comfortable working with individuals of diverse backgrounds and be able to manage complex financial and operational situations in an unpredictable environment. They must work in a collaborative manner and seek to build cohesion across the entire organization, with special attention to fostering positive relationships between administrative and program staff. Additionally, they must be comfortable traveling to and being in all CRED sites, the majority of which are on the south and west sides of Chicago. They must be a natural problem solver who is adept at seeking creative solutions and can balance operational compliance with innovation and flexibility. They must exemplify CRED values in all interactions with internal and external stakeholders. A dedication to CRED’s mission is essential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Finance
- Provide financial oversight for the organization and be responsible for the entire range of financial management, from daily operations to high-level strategy and management
- Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the leadership team
- Prepare monthly BvA statements for review with site leadership; ensure that they understand their budgets and problem solve with them if adjustments are needed
- Lead all financial planning and analysis on a weekly/monthly/quarterly basis, including presenting financial reports in an accurate and timely manner
- Liaise with outsourced firms for a variety of financial services (fiscal sponsor for some employees, payroll, insurance coverage)
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors
- Proactively present critical financial matters and provide strategic guidance to the Leadership Team
Human Resources
- Work collaboratively with the Director of People Operations to ensure the accuracy of payroll and benefits upon onboarding and offboarding
- Primary contact between HR Operations and fiscal sponsor which impact staff increases and department allocations
- Review and recommend best in class policies that impact organization operations and finance in areas such as risk management, fleet management and worker’s compensation with an understanding of the unique culture, work and dynamics of CRED
- Work with senior management to assure a dynamic, team-focused culture that encourages and respects multiple perspectives and sets clear organizational goalsLegal
- Manage relationship with outside corporate and not-for-profit counsel
- Review all contracts and agreements and seek outside legal advice when needed
- Proactively escalate any issues that may require legal support
- Support Chicago CRED board meetingsCompliance and Risk Management
- Responsible for compliance with all state and federal rules governing Private OperatingFoundations
- Regularly monitor potential situations that may result in financial or reputational risk
- Work closely with its outside insurance broker to create annual risk management planand secure appropriate levels of insurance coverage
- Provide technical assistance as needed to partner organizations around their fiscal and operational deficiencies to manage CRED’s risk by associationIn addition to leading these functions for Chicago CRED, the Director of Finance and Operations will be expected to support basic monthly financial functions for CRED MADE, which is Chicago CRED’s currently dormant for-profit entity.
Experience & Qualifications
- 7-10 years’ experience managing a broad range of Finance, administrative and operational functions across corporate and nonprofit functions
- Minimum 3-5 years leading finance, tax and legal functions for a nonprofit organization
- Strong financial and general management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external audiences
- Familiarity with technology and IT issues a plus
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree a plus
Location
This position is hybrid (in-person and online) with in-person meeting requirements throughout Chicagoland area.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work with a computer for extended periods of time-up to 50%.
- Ability to meet on weekends and after 9-5 hours based on needs to connect withcommunity meetings taking place outside of normal hours of operation.CompensationThe salary range for this position is $125,000-$140,000 (commensurate with experience).
