Engineering a world of possibilities
The Director ofEvent and Professional Education Services leads the Professional Education event planning and management, internal event services, space scheduling, rental contracts, and venue production of the Ben Parker Student Center and the Green Center. The person in this role provides the vision, growth and development of professional event programming (short courses, conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops) and internal event support, centralized space scheduling, external rental contracts, venue marketing, venue setup & production, technical event services. Responsibilities include the development of department budget, revenue management, rate structures, policies, procedures and overall program fiscal health and responsible growth.
This position works primarily on campus in Golden, Colorado.


Primary Responsibilities:


Leadership & Management

  • Strategic assessment of Eventsand Professional Education Services to ensure operations, scheduling, venues, programs and services are meeting or exceeding the department strategic goals.
  • As leader of the department, inspire others to contribute to achieve the department initiatives and annual goals.
  • Create and lead a culture and climate conducive to high-impact teamwork.
  • Develop a sustainable system for the professional growth and development of individual contributors.
  • Establish effective relationships with both internal and external constituencies and serve as an effective representative of the department and the university.
  • Directly oversee a team that drives positive results in an innovative, collaborative, effective, efficient, and high-quality manner.
  • Ensure that individuals with the appropriate mix of knowledge, skills, behaviors, and experiences are selected, and placed, with a focus on building a diverse and inclusive workplace.


Ensure Programs and Event Operations are effective and high quality

  • Develop strategic outreach that supports Professional Education optimizing the training and program needs of business and industry, locally, nationally and internationally in collaboration with vice provosts and deans.
  • Develop and maintain strategic marketing plans and publications to attract and retain clients of campus event spaces, while expanding Mines reputation as a regional leader in Event and conference venues.
  • Implement proven approaches to venue scheduling and production with the goal of maximizing quality while minimizing costs.
  • Develop a comprehensive, strategic, and prudent approach to venue technology, management and support.
  • Ensure that Event and Professional Education Services procedures and policies are well understood & transparent to internal and external clients, Mines senior leadership and Board of Trustees.


Ongoing Development of Services and Client Relations (Internal & External)

  • Ensure all Event and Professional Education Services/programs/contracts are in full compliance with current Mines risk management policies and procedures, especially related to the alcohol and minors on campus.
  • Provides direction, guidance, leadership and mentorship for department managers, promoting an open collaborative, inclusive work environment that encourages sharing of new ideas and concepts in support of ongoing improvement of Event services and client relations.


Provide effective fiduciary stewardship of University resources

  • Develop annual revenue and expense budget forecasts for department/divisions and five-year renewal plans for managed event spaces (Green Center and Student Center).
  • Develop, implement and maintain five-year revenue growth plan to coincide with program development. Provide AVP with annual reports on actual to plan variances, and projected strategies.
  • Manage department/divisional rollup operating budgets ensuring compliance and financial closeout schedules at fiscal year-end.

Salary and Benefits

Annual Rate: $90,000 - $101,100

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate's education, training and experience as well as the position's scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field, occupational supporting discipline or business administration, media, event management.
  • At least five years event management related experience including 2+ years supervisory/leadership experience.
  • Documented project management experience.
  • Demonstrated past success in planning, developing and implementing complex strategic goals and program initiatives.
  • Experience in change management.
  • Budget and resource management experience.
  • Knowledge of effective personnel administration, people management, and leadership.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to coordinate activities of multifaceted operations that provide support and services to a diverse constituency in a customer service centered manner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budgetary development and control principles relating to full scope of duties.
  • Ability to analyze, and provide recommended action on information gathered through a variety of methods (i.e. surveys, focus groups, best practices, strategic initiatives, etc.).
  • Experience and proficiency with event management software.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree and/or professional certification in business administration, higher education administration or tourism.
  • Experience in adult education, college, vocational tech school, military school, business/industry instructor, instructional media specialist or related professional specialty.
  • Project management certifications.
  • Experience with Accurent EMS, Events Air, and Star Res systems.
