SUMMARY OF PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Provide leadership and overall responsibility for administrative and clinical supervision of developmental counseling and mental health services provided to students for the purpose of enhancing their ability to function successfully in the student role. Consultation and training on psychological issues to faculty, staff and administrators for the purpose of enhancing the learning and working environment of the University. Crisis intervention and emergency mental health assessment for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment. The Counseling Center will have oversight of the Office of Care & Advocacy. As the needs of our students change, there is a need to focus on case management and build a synergy with Care & Advocacy and the Counseling Center. The incumbent will follow the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and overall responsibility for clinical and administrative coordination, training and supervision of the activities of professional, PhD level clinical staff, graduate interns, and administrative staff in the provision of mental health and related services to individual students and the campus community.
  • Supervise and manage the Office of Care & Advocacy to serve students in a case management capacity. This may include supervision of additional case managers as the needs of our student increase.
  • Lead strategic planning for the department and participate in strategic planning for Student Affairs Division.
  • Provide developmental, personal, educational, assessment and mental health counseling (primarily short-term psychotherapy) to individual students; facilitate counseling and psychoeducational groups. Administer and interpret psychological tests and instruments as needed. Cover walk-in periods, intake appointments, and crisis situations as needed.
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff, parents, prospective students and their parents, hospitals, and community mental health care providers regarding on-campus services and student mental health issues. Serve as a referral resource regarding community mental and social services for students.
  • Provide training to faculty, staff, and student groups on topics related to mental health, interpersonal skills, suicide prevention, etc.
  • Contract for Physician consultant services on a yearly basis, monitor consultant performance, monitor usage of service by students, provide support/supervision/education regarding campus and departmental changes to consultants.
  • Serve as campus liaison to community mental health and social service agencies. May service on mental health committees and taskforces as it related to mental health.
  • Develop policy and procedures for department including in-service training, office procedures, record-keeping, utilization review, quality assurance, scope of practice guidelines, etc.
  • Responsible for the departmental budget, 3rd party billing process, purchasing decisions and development of the annual operating plan for the department. Responsible for medical records, including overseeing requests for copies, and retention in accordance with state law and accreditation standards.
  • Manage and evaluate the effectiveness of online well-being and tools and resources. Work with marketing and academic affairs to increase student engagement with online resources.
  • Conduct end of semester and annual analysis of services provided and produce annual report including additional assessment as requested.
  • Maintain center accreditation in accordance with the International Association of Counseling Services.
  • Serve on the emergency/crisis response related to mental health including the behavioral threat assessment team and other committees as required.
  • Provide on-call service to campus departments and administrators for consultation on mental health emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Master’s degree in psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Higher Education, or related field

EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least seven (7) years or more of Counseling experience in a college or university Counseling Center, and five (5) years or more experience with crisis intervention and management.

OTHER:

  • Licensed or eligible for Massachusetts licensure as a psychologist, licensed certified social worker or licensed clinical social worker.
  • Serve on call on evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • May engage in local and regional travel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical and counseling psychology as applied to the developmental needs and issues of college students.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of psychological testing.
  • Thorough knowledge of mental illness and diagnostic categories. Familiarity with medications used to treat common mental disorders.
  • Ability to instruct others in psychological theory and technique. Ability to instruct others in an array of self-management techniques.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to professional ethical codes of conduct and state laws regarding the practice of psychology. Ability to utilize clinical supervision and consultation appropriately. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA regulations, familiarity with billing procedures, quality assurance procedures and utilization review
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities. Ability to lead a team of trained clinicians and trainees.
  • Significant experience managing budgets and short, mid and long-term planning.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate in Social Work, Clinical or Counseling Psychology
  • Experience as a Director of a college or university Counseling Center.
  • Experience as a training director or Director of a Clinical-internship program.
