Summary
Director of Accounting

We are seeking a Director of Accounting position who will serve as head of the accounting function for the company's largest division, which is comprised of multiple business units. The Director will lead the Accounting team, overseeing day-to-day transactional work, own the monthly close process and ensure the accuracy of reported financial results. The position reports to the VP of Finance, with exposure to the senior finance leadership team.
The position will oversee almost 40 business units which include multinationals, supermarket chains, financial institutions, small manufacturing companies, and universities. The Manager will lead a small team of accountants covering a wide range of initiatives and will need to be comfortable managing multiple projects, initiatives, and competing priorities. The successful candidate should have operated successfully in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment and have the ability to influence the decisions of senior business leaders through effective verbal and written communication, logical reasoning and the presentation of alternatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a functional leader providing guidance and direction to Accounting team, as well functional expert resolving technical accounting treatment questions.
  • Responsible for the month-end close process and integrity of financial results for the entire division, including P&L and balance sheet.
  • Manage Accounting team including optimizing organizational structure, hiring and developing staff, assigning duties, evaluating performance, and ensuring quality results.
  • Work with M&A team to successfully integrate new acquisitions onto Company systems and processes.
  • Coordinate with AR and AP areas to ensure proper revenue recognition and payment of expenses - be a thought leader in streamlining processes around these functions.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, identifying and implementing best practices in the Accounting and Finance functions.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent job-related experience is required; MBA Degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Minimum of 10+ years progressively responsible related financial experience required
  • 10+ years of credible accounting and reporting background with substantial experience in accounting closes, consolidations, financial reporting, audits, budgeting, and forecasting
  • 5-8+ years of supervisory experience in medium to large teams
  • Experience with significant revenue and relevant industries
  • Advanced Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint

The salary range for this role is $160,000-$180,000

Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Director of Accounting position will serve as head of the accounting function for the company's largest division, which is comprised of multiple business units. The Director will lead the Accounting team, overseeing day-to-day transactional work, own the monthly close process and ensure accuracy of reported financial results.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as functional leader providing guidance and direction to Accounting team, as well functional expert resolving technical accounting treatment questions.
  • Responsible for the month-end close process and integrity of financial results for entire division, including P&L and balance sheet.
  • Develop a system of controls, processes, and related documentation to ensure data integrity.
  • Manage Accounting team including optimizing organizational structure, hiring and developing staff, assigning duties, evaluating performance, and ensuring quality results.
  • Achieve expertise with Microsoft Dynamics AX system and contribute to streamlining accounting processes in newly implemented environment.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on what financial data the company has and how to access it.
  • Challenge the current reporting environment to explore opportunities for improvement or overhaul in financial management reporting.
  • Work with M&A team to successfully integrate new acquisitions onto Company systems and processes.
  • Manage implementation of new accounting standards and corporate accounting policies.
  • Support timely audits and interim reviews by company's external audit firm.
  • Collaborate with and support business-unit-level Finance and Accounting staff.
  • Coordinate with AR and AP areas to ensure proper revenue recognition and payment of expenses - be a thought leader in streamlining processes around these functions.
  • Liaise with Corporate Controller's office regarding processes, timelines, and requirements.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, identifying and implementing best practices into the Accounting and Finance functions.

- Hires, retains, trains, coaches, guides, directs, and develops direct reports using company-wide processes, tools and resources
Indirect Reports
- May delegate work of others and provide guidance, direction and mentoring to indirect reports
Travel and/or Driving Requirements
- Travel is an essential duty and function of this job. Driving is not an essential duty or function of this job.

Minimum Qualifications
The following are the minimum job-related qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.
Education Level:
(Required) Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
(Preferred) Master's Degree or equivalent experience
Field of Study/Area of Experience: Accounting, Finance or related field, CPA preferred
- 10+ years of credible accounting and reporting background with substantial experience in accounting closes, consolidations, financial reporting, audits, budgeting and forecasting
- 8+ years of experience in General Ledger, Accounts Receivable and Consolidation
- 5-8 years of supervisory experience of medium to large teams
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Proven track record as head of Accounting for a company/division with multiple business units
  • Strong technical understanding of Accounting principles and practices, with experience across many facets of Accounting
  • Willingness to be hands on, but experienced in leading teams of 10 or more professionals with emphases on organizational structure, individual development and process improvement
  • Ability to interact with senior leadership, influence points of view without having direct authority, and work toward consensus
  • Ability to multi-task across portfolio of business units and projects, and be successful in a fast-paced environment
  • Natural ability for being detail-oriented and accurate with numbers and reporting
  • Highly collaborative and perceptive, and shows prudent analysis in problem solving
  • Proven influencer who can drive change, improve processes, and provide sound solutions to complex and routine business issues
  • Extensive knowledge of US GAAP accounting
  • Comfort and competence using financial systems; Microsoft Dynamics AX a plus
  • ERP implementation and process improvement experience strongly desired
  • Advanced Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Experience in a Fortune 500 organization a plus
  • Retail, CPG or Service industry experience a plus

Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Typically requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time (66%+ each day), ability to hear the telephone, ability to enter data on a computer and may also require the ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
