Job Description
The Office of Academy Resources at Phillips Academy seeks a Director for Advancement Initiatives. This position will manage a portfolio of Office of Academy Resources development priorities, including for the school’s museums and outreach programs. The Director is the primary liaison partnering with program directors, advancing funding priorities as well as meeting annual goals for these programs. This includes managing a portfolio of prospects in addition to ensuring that gift officers are knowledgeable on these priorities and have the resources required for cultivating and soliciting gifts on behalf of each program. In providing development oversight for these initiatives, the Director will advance donor lists, coordinate effective prospect strategies including directors’ partnership, build and execute a comprehensive marketing and direct mail plan and perform other duties as required. The Director will also be the primary contact for advisory groups for these programs, managing agendas, development reports and related fundraising activity. Reporting to the Director of Development and working collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of Academy Resources. The Director will manage the Director of Development for the Addison Gallery and a Coordinator for Museums and Outreach, to secure the resources that are essential to maintaining Andover’s place at the forefront of private secondary education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will bring experience and passion in the following areas:
- Serve as a liaison between OAR and the Addison Gallery, Peabody Museum, IRT, MS2, ABL and other Development priorities, assisting with strategy, communication and solicitation materials, reporting needs, and advisory board meetings;
- Implement best practices and work closely with staff members of the OAR team, faculty and senior administration and advisory board volunteers to develop effective strategies for prospects with the capacity to make a gift;
- Maintain awareness among gift officers of the funding priorities within the museums and outreach programs and provide them with content for meetings and proposals;
- Assist in the facilitation of regular prospect reviews and prospect visits with program directors on and off campus;
- Manage a portfolio of museum and/or educational outreach donors as necessary;
- Monitor and document prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations;
- Conduct all efforts in a fiscally responsible manner;
- Perform other duties as required.

- Ability to collaborate with immediate team, OAR and campus colleagues. Delegate and manage multiple time-sensitive tasks with little supervision. Respect the confidential nature of the work. Commitment and ability to articulate the mission of Phillips Academy.
- Ability to build and maintain a positive work environment by collaborating and partnering with colleagues in Development, OAR, and the campus. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to meet deadlines as well as to collaborate with OAR colleagues to serve our campus, alumni, and family constituencies.
- Travel—including overnight travel—is required, both locally off-campus as well as out of state.
- Night and weekend work is required for events and donor engagements, both on campus and off, including out of state.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of direct or transferrable experience, development, project management or educational setting.
The ideal candidate will have experience working on fundraising campaigns, excellent writing and oral communication skills, knowledge of databases, strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to being a member of the OAR team are essential for this position.
