Job description

About Generate:Biomedicines:

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of Machine Learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a Machine Learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 millionin funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 300 employees.

The Role:

We are seeking a visionary Senior Director of Machine Learning (ML) Engineering with a deep focus on AI/ML to lead our engineering team within the Computational Sciences (CS) department. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), this role will lead our growing engineering function within CS, collaborating with leaders of ML, Data Science, Protein Generation, and other groups to define and standardize our engineering practices and philosophies. This is an opportunity to architect the definitive engineering platform for enabling therapeutic protein generation at scale.

Generate:Biomedicines is an innovative platform company leveraging Machine Learning and at-scale experimentation to generate novel protein therapeutics. We combine, within one seamless end-to-end platform, cutting-edge generative ML capabilities with the ability to take molecules into the clinic, having progressed two of the assets generated by our platform towards clinical testing. You will be pivotal in architecting our engineering vision, aligning it with our overall strategy, and developing performant solutions to further enable our at-scale application of generative models to molecular design and therapeutic optimization, processing and learning from wet-lab data, and the broader integration of ML models across the drug development process and the operation of our platform.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Lead and grow the engineering function within the Computational Sciences department, ensuring seamless integration with other scientific groups.
  • Develop and articulate a compelling vision for engineering approaches, principles, and philosophies, integrating the needs and plans from the Machine Learning, Data Science, Protein Generation, and Quantitative Biology teams.
  • Define and implement best practices and standards for software engineering, including code quality, review processes, and architectural design.
  • Regularly assess and incorporate emerging technologies and methodologies to maintain our leadership in scientific computing.
  • Serve as a leader and mentor for members of the CS Engineering team and engineers in other parts of the organization, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive the development and deployment of cutting-edge Machine Learning models and computational strategies.
  • Oversee the design and execution of robust, scalable, and efficient computational systems for protein therapeutic generation.
  • Be a humble leader, open to learning from others and sharing knowledge.
  • Contribute strategic insights to the CTO, CS leadership team, and executive leadership, aiding in the overall scientific and technological direction of the company.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record in leading and scaling engineering teams in a biotech or similar high-tech environment.
  • Experience in building for speed and scale in production systems.
  • Extensive experience in Machine Learning, data science, and computational strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineering talent, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with a history of successful cross-functional collaboration.
  • In-depth understanding of modern software development practices and technologies, including agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Experience in scientific computing and handling large-scale computational projects.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate complex scientific and technical concepts into actionable plans.
  • Experience in product development and deploying new technologies either in an organizational context or on the external market.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, thriving in fast-paced and dynamic environments.
