Job description

The Role:
Morningstar is seeking an experienced Financial Crime Compliance Officer to oversee the Financial Crime programs for Morningstar globally. Morningstar operates non-regulated entities and regulated investment advisory, credit rating, investment management, ESG and index businesses globally. The position will involve interaction with management across all levels, with various Board of Directors, as well as senior regional business, product and compliance teams. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in overseeing broad-based Financial Crime compliance programs and be capable of operating across multiple jurisdictions. This role reports to Morningstar's Global Chief Compliance Officer - Global Internal Controls.
This role is based in Chicago, and we are operating in a hybrid work environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource regarding Financial Crime compliance at Morningstar.
  • Direct, build out and maintain Morningstar's compliance risk management program for Financial Crimes regulations in alignment with the following - I) Risk Identification, II) Risk Assessment, III) Monitoring/Testing/Controls, IV) Issues Management, V) Reporting, and VI) Policy/Procedures.
  • Direct the compliance risk management oversight activities, including advising the business, designing monitoring activities and contributing to testing over Financial Crime (AML/KYC/Sanctions).
  • Define an effective CDD/EDD risk rating and monitoring program to include initial and ongoing assessments, reviews and analyses unusual account activity.
  • Manage day to day sanctions screening process and remediate red flags with the business as necessary.
  • Ensure appropriate compliance policies, procedures and training exist that address regulatory and risk management requirements for Financial Crime.
  • Continuously improve and maintain compliance program consistent with the compliance risk management framework and industry practice.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of, and keeping abreast of developments in, laws and regulations globally that impose Financial Crime compliance obligations on Morningstar's products and services.
  • Mentoring other compliance professionals on their work and management activities and their career development and goals.
  • As requested by the GCCO-GIC, represent Morningstar with international regulators, and oversee the interactions with such regulators, with regard to exams and other regulatory matters in respect to Financial Crime.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 7+ years relevant Financial Crime Compliance-related functional experience
  • Deep understanding of the financial services industry is required and must include experience gained in B2B and B2C financial services, payments, processing, financial technology or another diversified financial services firm.
  • Strong team management and leadership skills - Role manages 2 full time employees.
  • A strategic thinker who has the outstanding ability to drive creative solutions to complex commercial and regulatory challenges.
  • Experience in high transaction, large/complex/matrixed business environment within Financial Services
  • Must have a track record of developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy and plan for managing Financial Crime regulation across a global and diverse organization
  • Experienced in regulatory level reporting (e.g. OFAC), in addition to managing regulatory expectations within financial services.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization, while being able to simplify complex topics for understanding and critical decision making by Senior Leadership
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and analytical skills; proven ability to effectively drive global teams to meet challenging deadlines solving complex problems.
  • Ability to apply a broad and comprehensive understanding across multiple functional areas.
  • Strong work ethic, and an excellent use of discretion and judgment.
  • Willingness to work across time zones globally and flexibly.
