Reporting to the Vice President for Education and working with key stakeholders in Research, Information Technology (IT and R-IT), Computational Sciences (CS), and Education, the Director of Data Science Training is responsible for launching and managing a OneJAX Data Science and Computational Genetics/Genomics Training Program. The Director will play an essential role that increases the competency of JAX staff, students and graduate students in Data Science skills. The role is directly aligned with strategic efforts to support Data Science and a Data Science center/institute at JAX.
The incumbent will direct and be a key instructor within an annual schedule of courses and workshops and advise and deploy internal practitioner consultants (e.g. faculty, CS and R-IT staff) and develop and support an internal group of Data Science Tutors (e.g. graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and CS or R-IT staff). The Director will collaborate on the development of skill assessment tools and will integrate efforts with JAX HR on assessing the Data Science skill level of new employees and the determination of necessary skill sets by position type.
The Director, Data Science Training is expected to work onsite on our Farmington, CT and Bar Harbor, ME campuses at least one week per month.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage annual DS course and workshop schedule
- Coordinate instructors (practitioner consultants and tutors)
- Act as Institutional eyes and ears to keep program flexible and up to date
- Work and consult with JAX Genomic Education team to use best practices and instructional design on DS training programs
- Utilize and enhance existing educational programs to set schedule
- Assess external learning resources for deployment in JAX program (e.g. Biostatistics, Python, Machine Learning resources).
- Teach entry and intermediate DS programs
- Provide just-in-time training for individuals in JAX mentored research programs (e.g. Summer Student Program, Post-bacc program, etc.)
- Provide educational leadership on Rigor and Reproducibility in Data Science and Computational Analyses, including leading internal training in the subject area.
- As appropriate, Full director level candidates will teach graduate-level Data Science and Computational Genomics course or workshops for affiliated graduate programs
- Interact with JAX computational faculty, and Data Science leaders at JAX and update programs based on feedback and developing areas in CS and Computational Genomics
- Maintain awareness of new and current Data Science techniques and technologies and data and meta-data standards
- Collaborate with Education VP or other staff in writing grants for DS education efforts
- Write NIH and or NSF grants supporting Data Science education efforts
- Complete other related duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as computer science or a data-related field with clear evidence of instruction and innovation in Data Science education, including Computational Genetics/Genomics, systems biology and/or management of large biological data sets.
- At least 3 years of relevant professional experience
- Evidence of teaching and curriculum development training required; Data Carpentry certified instructor preferred
- Track record of leading and collaborating on educational program development initiatives
- Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups
- Experience working with a wide range of learners
- Ability to assess existing courses and workshops and enhance these programs
- Ability to interact with faculty and staff in a collegial manner that engenders trust and promotes collaboration;
- Ability to manage and deliver educational programs in a timely fashion with quantifiable learning and skills outcomes for learners;
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities to thrive in a fast-paced environment, while also collaborating as part of a team serving diverse groups of learners and staff;
- Willingness to travel between JAX sites to build relationships with learners, practitioner consultants, tutors and key leaders in Data Science.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $111,488.00 - 186,655.50
