Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Materials and Manufacturing Science and Technology group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Biomass Feedstock National User Facility Director! This team works a hybrid 9x80 schedule located at our Energy System Laboratory with every other Friday off. Director, Bioenergy National User Facility: Bioenergy National User Facility (BFNUF) Director, responsibilities include:

  • Lead all business development opportunities/efforts associated with BFNUF. Identify new clients and seek new business opportunities for the BFNUF.
  • Directly responsible for growing the bioenergy feedstock budget authority and business volume.
  • Recognized technical expert in the bioenergy feedstock technology area.
  • Lead all BFNUF investments within INL, and coordinate execution efforts to ensure operational safety and customer satisfaction. Inform Division Director of emerging issues.
  • Develop and lead Regional and Federated bioenergy feedstock partnerships.
  • Mentor junior engineers and scientists.
  • Ensure BFUNF alignment with BETO goals and strategy.
  • Closely work with INL Agreements department to get various work agreements in place and notify Division Director with bottlenecks occur.
  • Represent INL in conferences, workshops, and other meetings as a key bioenergy spokesperson.
  • Interact with and manage multiple clients in multiple business and research sectors, focusing on industrial entities relevant to energy feedstocks and bioenergy in general.
  • Closely work with EES&T Program Director's office to coordinate activities and recommend PDF and capital investments.
  • Lead in the preparation of proposals to be submitted and help prepare proposals, User Facility agreements and NDAs.
  • Provide input on resource and equipment requirements for the BFNUF to effectively respond to industry needs and DOE BETO.
  • Ensure maximum engagement for the User facility within the INL's portfolio.
  • Assist in key recruitment needs.
  • Review and approve assigned technical papers for outside publication.
Senior Bioenergy Relationship Manager Serve as the Bioenergy Relationship Manager in support of the Bioenergy Annual Operating Plan (AOP), with emphasis on maintaining and developing the primary relationships between INL and DOE's Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO), and all other associated national laboratories. Represent the Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate's capabilities within this scope to both external and internal customers. Directly interact with clients and stakeholders on both current and future programs and projects. Interact and manage multiple clients across multiple program areas. Represent the INL in business discussions and makes commitments to BETO and other national labs. The Bioenergy Relationship Manager identifies and supports the development of new bioenergy business for the laboratory consistent with the directorate and department strategic plans, as well as leading and developing content for a Bioenergy Strategic Plan. This position works with existing customers to maintain existing business base and supports engagement with industry, academic institutions, national laboratories, and INL directorates to develop collaborations that create new business. This position ensures the delivery of products to customers through effective interface with executing line management and operational organizations. The Bioenergy Relationship Manager must be familiar with all types of bioenergy pathways such as, biochemical and thermochemical conversion of biomass to fuels/chemicals, biopower, and algae. This position requires a proven track record and domain expertise in feedstock systems and should show a history of new business development in the areas of biochemical, thermochemical, biopower, and algal feedstocks. This position also requires the ability to support and promote the development of newly emerging feedstocks. This position requires good interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with DOE-HQ customers, other national laboratories, universities, private industry sponsors, research collaborators, and subcontractors. Experience in the preparation of research and development proposals particularly in response to federal solicitations is required. A record of preparing proposals involving industry, academia, and other national labs is highly desired. A history of publications and peer reviewed journal articles is required. An authorship record of DOE reports, customer and technical society presentations, intellectual property, and/or technical products is highly desired. As a senior biomass program point of contact, the candidate must be acceptable to the DOE EERE Bioenergy Technology Office.Qualifications: Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD in bioenergy science field
  • 10 years in the area of bioenergy or related fields of research and study. Preference given to candidates with a demonstrable track record of creating and securing funding opportunities.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
