The Boston University (BU) Animal Science Center provides veterinary care and research support for all animals used in research and teaching at BU and at Boston Medical Center (BMC). The Director and Attending Veterinarian of the Animal Science Center oversees veterinary medical care and husbandry services; assures compliance with all BU policies, laws and regulations concerning the use of animals in research; and provides veterinary medical advice to researchers.The Director acts as the Attending Veterinarian for all animal research at BU and BMC and supports these activities by developing and implementing an effective animal care and use program.

Required Skills

The Animal Science Center Director and Attending Veterinarian has the following responsibilities:

Leadership

•Responsible for the management of the veterinary technical staff, all clinical veterinarians, and ASC husbandry operations.

•Leads the strategic planning and goal setting for the department, and oversee a staff development program (i.e., AALAS certifications).

Veterinary Care

•Develops and implements the Program of Veterinary Care for Boston University.

•Ensures that all research animals are in good health and free of spontaneous disease.

•Oversees programs of disease prevention and control commensurate with accepted veterinary medical and laboratory animal husbandry practices.

•Oversees and direct services in all aspects of veterinary care of various species (rodents, non-human primates, frogs, birds, chinchillas, fish, and other Lab Animals), including husbandry and enrichment. This may include providing clinical veterinary medical care, surgical, analgesic and anesthetic support or advice to researchers.

•Directs the quarantine and isolation of animals.

•Cooperates with various researchers as necessary to ensure that a minimal health standard is established and met for animals as appropriate.

•Vested with the authority to establish and assign the clinical coverage dates, times, and after-hours coverage for all veterinary technicians and clinical veterinarians.

Facility Management and Operations

•Coordinates the operations and administration of the ASC across all locations to ensure uniform policies and procedures pertaining to animal care and use at BU.

•Develops and periodically updates standard operating procedures.

Regulatory Compliance

Serves as the Attending Veterinarian for Boston University and provides advice to the IACUC.

•Serves as a voting member of the IACUC.

•Serves on appropriate University committees relating to research activities, as assigned.

•Reviews animal research protocols for IACUC and IBC.

•Trains veterinarians, technicians, and researchers in proper methodology, handling, surgery and other veterinary medical areas and descriptive terminology using ASC personnel or other available resources.

•Ensures facility and researcher compliance with NIH/OLAW guidelines, AAALAC requirements and animal welfare regulations.

•Assists with site visits.

Budget and Planning

Provides data and expertise to assist in cost accounting of veterinary services and related technical functions.

•Oversees the ASC budget (e.g. recharge development and implementation, managing and tracking of expenditure and revenue, etc.).

Research Support

Advises and counsels investigators on animal and research problems related to animal wellbeing, health, use, and the interaction of spontaneous disease with research goals.

•Provides technical support to research scientists.

Qualifications

The Animal Science Center Director and Attending Veterinarian will ideally have the following desired qualifications:

•Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA-Accredited University and active licensure in at least one US state

•American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine certification

•Significant experience running an animal care and use program at an academic medical center

•Experience serving on an IACUC as Attending Veterinarian

•Knowledge of and/or experience overseeing compliance with current USDA, PHS, OLAW,IACUC, and AAALAC rules, regulations, and standards

•Experience achieving and maintaining AAALAC accreditation

•Proven skill providing laboratory animal care utilizing critical care techniques

•Experience in developing and leading teams, managing people and animal research facilities, and building rapport to influence messaging, acceptance, and understanding

•Ability to coach and provide clear direction to direct reports and other staff

•Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills with the ability to effectively present to all levels of the organization

•Experience working with academic faculty investigators of varied backgrounds and experience levels

•Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to shift priorities as needed while making effective use of time and resources

•Demonstrated strong business judgement, critical thinking, problem solving, and effective decision-making skills

•Ability to quickly identify areas of improvement and implement solutions with an interdisciplinary approach

•Process driven with the ability to execute functional processes while using appropriate change management approaches

•Experience carrying out audits or inspections

•Strong sense of entrepreneurship, accountability, responsibility, and sense of ownership
