YRH DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL/ PEER ADVOCATE

Salary: $19-$23/hourly D.O.E.

Report to: Home Support Coordinator

Location: Klamath Falls, Oregon

Number of hires: 1

Part Time Weekend Overnight Shift 12:00a - 8:30a (Rotating Weekends)

SUMMARY:

The ideal candidate will have an Associate’s in human services related field, 3 or more years experience working in residential with vulnerable populations or a Bachelor Degree with at least one year in a residential setting. DSP’s will be responsible for direct services to youth on a daily basis. DSP’s will provide youth with assistance in developing natural supports, assist youth in creating long-term life goals known as life-assignments (40 Developmental Assets), utilize and assist youth in gaining problem-solving skills, assist service recipients in identifying and combating negative self-talk, provide supervision and promote safety and a clean environment for service recipients and families. DSP’s must be capable of monitoring youth and identifying needs throughout their shift, greet new youth and community members at the door, provide resources on community supports & services, support youth with how to identify assets, engage disengaged youth to participate in new activities, and cultivate a safe, inclusive environment filled with empowerment and healthy boundaries between peer-peers and staff peers.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Direct Support Professional (DSP)/ Peer Advocate will provide peer support services to residents at the YR House facility, many of whom experience challenges related to mental health, oppression, and other system involvement.

DSP’s will be expected to demonstrate competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills to build connections with youth and assist in needs-identification, solution brainstorming, and self-advocacy.

DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Assist youth in identifying and attending other support services, resources, or opportunities.
  • Provide youth with assistance in developing natural supports.
  • Assist youth in creating long-term life goals known as life-assignments.
  • Utilize and assist youth in gaining problem-solving skills.
  • Assist peers in identifying and combating negative self-talk.
  • Providing and advocating for effective recovery-based services.
  • Assisting peers in obtaining services that suit their recovery needs.
  • Meeting with mental health professionals to improve relations between peers & staff.
  • Modeling effective communication skills, and problem-solving to resolve a conflict between youth and staff.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices including Positive Youth Development, CPS, Wraparound and the 40 Developmental Assets.
  • Adherence to on-site program goals, documentation standards, and reporting in Excel, OneDrive, Google Platforms, and client portal
  • Assist management in cultivating and navigating local services for trainings, professional development, youth services, and facility needs
  • Maintain a calendar of outreach activities, including community events, workshops, appearances, and other communication opportunities.
  • Navigate tracking systems for youth development
  • Prepare communications, such as memos, emails, invoices, reports, and other correspondence
  • Nurture new and old relationships with collaborative partners.
  • Attend weekly supervision meeting and submit reports
  • Incumbent is legally required to report all suspected incidents of child abuse/neglect.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree in a social services discipline is PREFERRED with 3+ years exp; or 5+ years exp in youth-serving program management may be considered.

Degrees that can be considered include social work, drug and alcohol education or counseling, psychology, criminal justice, guidance counseling, or marriage and family therapy. Other degrees will have to be evaluated further to determine if they meet the qualifications.

  • Experience working with youth, individuals or families in need of crisis intervention is preferred
  • MUST be able to use e-mail, compose documents, save and locate documents electronically, and learn to use electronic records systems.
  • Willingness to update job skills and knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and attending trainings.
  • Valid Driver's License & Reliable vehicle
  • Must pass background check
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Food Handlers Card
  • Universal precautions
  • Discipline and behavior management

POSITION TYPE & SCHEDULE:

PT (16 hours/week -- weekends)

Hours are subject to change.

*Schedule may include irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends.
