Stanford University Libraries is seeking a part-time Digitization & Document Delivery Specialist to join the Remote Storage Department, better known as SAL3. About the Position:

Stanford Auxiliary Library 3 is a high-density, high efficiency, climate controlled, preservation warehouse located in Livermore, California. Operations at SAL3 revolve around processing new incoming books and boxes for long-term preservation storage as well as processing items that have been requested for use at a campus library (delivered via a daily delivery truck) or as scanned PDF’s that are delivered by email.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Head or the Head of SAL3, the Digitization & Document Delivery Specialist will perform the daily Scan-to-PDF services offered by SAL3 for Stanford University patrons. The Digitization & Document Delivery Specialist verifies citations in a variety of databases, identifies any existing electronic access to texts, interprets and applies copyright restrictions, and performs all document imaging activities such as scanning and posting documents electronically through specialized software.

Core Duties*:

  • Provide basic reference assistance.
  • Perform routing circulation functions, such as charges, discharges, and holds.
  • Perform routine catalog maintenance, receiving, and/or copy cataloging.
  • Compile basic container lists or indexes of archival materials.
  • Perform a wide range of activities throughout a variety of digitization workflows for library materials.
  • Collect and maintain library statistics; may produce reports for management.
  • May be responsible for opening and closing activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • Two-year college degree plus one or more years of experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to understand and communicate library policy.
  • Ability to apply judgement in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives.
  • Ability to learn library operational skills.
  • Basic leadership skills.

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include:

  • Ability to use library content management database system software.
  • Ability to use specialized overhead scanner and utilize several key library databases and software to digitize library materials.
  • Tolerant of bright flash of scanner light and sound/pitch of document scanner.
  • Visual acuity including color vision for scanning service.
  • Ability to work in a cold storage unit where the climate is controlled at 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 38% humidity.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires initial push force up to 70 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
