General Description

Under the general supervision of HOPE Program PI, provides instruction in STEM to students grades K-5 in groups of varying sizes. Conducts classes individually or as part of an instructional team, sometimes in concentrated formats, possibly in sequences with atypical time-lapses, or in other patterns dictated by the curricula design and/or needs of the sponsor. Will conduct classes at Hostos Community College for a Summer Program. Following curricula guidelines, develops instructional plans and prepares instructional materials; uses and incorporates prescribed materials as requested. Utilizes traditional as well as state of the art delivery methods. Assists in developing and administering assessment tools.

ABOUT OUT PROGRAM:

The Hostos Oasis for Parents’ Education (HOPE) Program is a Two Gen Summer Program for student parents and their children. This is part of a research project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2022-2026. Each summer, we will welcome 12-24 student parents and their children (approx. 15-25) to our campus, Hostos Community College, in the South Bronx.

School-aged children will participate in the HOPE Academy for approximately 4 weeks (June 27-July 31) from 8 AM-4 PM Monday-Thursday. Additional time will be compensated for preparation and debriefing. Our STEM and ELO instruction will occur primarily in the mornings with activities and push-in's from a variety of on-campus providers in the afternoons. Three to four modules of instruction will be expected each day. Teachers are invited to eat breakfast and lunch with the program (we have excellent caterered food!) and will be given 1-2 preps per day.

Our research model and programming are based on a holistic model of support for student parents including Family (high quality childcare for their children and nutritious meals during HOPE), Education (experiential learning college courses, advising, tutoring), and Professionalism (mentoring, colloquia, and professional development workshops).

Other Duties

  • Specifies equipment and support needs well in advance; confirms schedules, room assignments and equipment availability prior to each class;

  • Assumes responsibility for managing the instructional session and responds in a professional manner to any student needs/requests.

  • With the concurrence of the supervisor modifies instructional plans and approaches in response to feedback.

  • Secures equipment at the end of a session consistent with department policy and/or notifies responsible personnel.

  • Evaluates student progress using established procedures.

  • Reports problems on a timely basis.

  • Complies with HOPE Program deadlines. Submits timesheets and other administrative reports as required.

  • Submits teaching outlines and assignment samples in advance when asked.

  • In consultation with other instructional staff, formulates ideas for program improvements and recommends these to program managers; attends staff meetings.

  • Leads a team or works independently in the development of a new curricula and of instructional materials in response to identified student needs or sponsor guidelines; coordinates with other learning specialists;

  • Debriefs supervisors and sponsors on request and following completion of a program;

  • Performs the duties of lower level positions when necessary; performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to plan and organize instruction, demonstrations, or performances of relevant material;

  • Ability to develop and utilize supporting instructional materials (including but not limited to those involving AV, computer software, role-plays, diagnostic tests, etc.);

  • Ability to respond effectively to feedback and adjust teaching strategies and materials in order to motivate students and to respond to student needs;

  • Ability to deliver instruction effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to listen and respond effectively to concerns and interests;

  • Ability to work and teach independently as well as part of a team;

  • Ability to manage the classroom environment, including in off-site locations.

  • Appreciation and support of the diversity and varying learning styles of adult participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in elementary education or early childhood education (2-year degrees will be considered) AND

  • A minimum of two years experience working with elementary children in a Summer Program and/or educational setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher with teaching certification in elementary education

  • 3+ years teaching in New York City Public Schools

  • Proficiency in Spanish or French
