Job Description Summary
The Penn Libraries’ Holman Biotech Commons seeks a Digital Fabrication Lab Operator with passion for customer service to join the Bollinger Digital Fabrication team in providing Digital Fabrication services to the Penn community.
The digital Lab Operator will be primarily responsible for Poster Printing Services in the lab.
The operator will also assist with the inventories of materials, will have an instrumental role in creating and improving workflows for processing fabrication requests, and will assist researchers with simple evaluations of conference posters. This position requires exceptional attention to detail and work ethic in providing stellar service at a high-paced environment.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Process in-person and online Poster Printing orders including reviewing files, performing image quality checks, validating printability, communicating with customers about potential printing issues and processing payments.
  • Edit files in Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Acrobat and Illustrator).
  • Manage print queues and prioritize requests in anticipation of volume and staff schedules.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot large format printers.
  • Manage the inventory levels of lab materials, confirm stock availability with vendors, and re-order as necessary to ensure there is no down time in lab operations.
  • Train student workers and interns as needed and monitor their performance to ensure high quality of customer service.
  • Track printer usage of all print jobs using Microsoft Excel and prepare utilization summaries for administrative staff.
  • Contribute to creating workflows for various lab services.
  • Liaise with various university departments such as facilities and environmental health and safety as needed to ensure smooth lab operations.
  • Provide backup to team members for other lab services and train colleagues to provide assistance in Poster Printing Services.

  • Provide back up to fabrication services staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/ GED and three to five years of experience in a customer service position, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required.
  • Technical degree preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented documentation skills are required
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator) is required.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team are required.
  • Ability to work well with others and without supervision is required.
  • Machine shop skills preferred .
