Job description

The University of Virginia Library seeks applications for a Digital Archivist. Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the Digital Archivist facilitates acquisition, processing, discoverability, and access for the rare and unique holdings of Small Special Collections , in both paper and digital format. The individual in this position will be responsible for processing digital archival materials, utilizing ArchivesSpace to create finding aids and digital objects for online publication to full national standards. Primary duties will also include leading the Special Collections web archiving program.
In addition, the Digital Archivist will play a key role in implementing a reparative framework for all materials. They will work in collaboration with other divisions of the UVA Library to develop innovative methods of describing and disseminating library material, reflecting the newest developments in the field. The successful candidate in this position recognizes the importance of reparative work and social justice in this field and strives to create and contribute to an anti-racist work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve s as the main resource for born-digital records issues and solutions; provide s implementation training for new or updated processes.
  • Lead s the Special Collections web archiving program, in collaboration with the University Archivist, Digital Preservation Analyst, and other stakeholders.
  • Appraise s and assist s with transfers of hybrid and born-digital collections, in consultation with Curators and University Archivist.
  • Utilize s digital forensics tools and techniques on a FRED (Forensic Recovery Evidentiary Device) and other devices.
  • Arrange s and describe s hybrid and born-digital archival collections.
  • Prepare s and package s digital content for preservation.
  • Participate s in regular reference desk service in the reading room.
  • Keep s current with emerging standards and practices in the field of archives, including changes in technology for digital archives-related tools, systems, and practices.
  • Hire s and supervise s student workers.

Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science degree or related Advanced degree. A bachelor’s degree and 4 years may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Coursework covering archival materials, including physical and born-digital content.
  • Knowledge of strategies developed or adopted by the archival community for managing and processing archival material, such as MPLP, and applied specially to born-digital content and web archiving.
  • Knowledge of tools and software used to capture, manage, transfer and deliver born-digital records, including web archiving activities and tools.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards for archival description and preservation including DACS, EAD, METS, and PREMIS. Familiarity with other related metadata standards.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work with colleagues in collaborative and team environments, as well as working independently.


Preferred Experience and Knowledge:
  • Two or more years full-time experience working as an Archivist with hands-on experience processing born-digital and physical materials.
  • Digital Archives Specialist certification from the Society of American Archivists.
  • Experience editing XML in oXygen or another XML editor.
  • Experience with scripting languages ( e.g. Python, SQL, XSLT) to transform or remediate metadata.
  • Knowledge of laws and ethics that inform digital archives and digitization activities in a higher education environment, such as acquisition, access, and intellectual property.
