SalaryJob Summary:
The Digital Collections Archivist will work closely with the Director of Archives and the Director of Curation & Collections. This individual will be responsible for overseeing “game day” activities and workflows, ensuring that brand-defining digital assets are properly collected, chosen, identified and described, and routed to be archived.
Key Responsibilities:
- Play a strong support role in the management of Digital Collections, including establishing policies and procedures, planning workflows, setting priorities, and making budget recommendations.
- Develop the Game Day workflow and processes for the acquisition, assessment, processing, arrangement, preservation, access, and description of game/event day photography and digital content, and other brand-defining digital content from all Ilitch companies.
- Collecting definitive game/event photography and digital content, as well as key final digital files related to advertising / public relations campaigns, and other organization defining moments across all Ilitch companies.
- Uploading and tagging curated digitized content, following established naming conventions, index terminology, numbering systems, and other organization conventions.
- Help manage the Digital Asset Management System in collaboration with internal colleagues and an external Archival Services agency; create, catalog, store, locate, retrieve and back up digital assets related to the heritage of all Ilitch companies.
- Help formulate policy compatible with emerging standards, establishing guidelines and workflows for Digital Collections, including digitization, metadata, intellectual property, and digital preservation.
- Support the Digital Collections team in developing, assigning, and overseeing appropriate metadata for assets to optimize search capabilities and ensure proper usage rights.
- Analyze metadata across all Digital Collections to enhance descriptions, harmonize conflicts and inconsistencies, and optimize search capabilities.
- Play a strong role in communications between representative teams from different Ilitch Companies and both the internal Digital Asset Management Core Team and the external Archives Services core team.
- Support colleague requests from all Ilitch companies that concern event/game day digital assets.
- Maintain and promote awareness and understanding of developments and trends in the field of digital preservation.
- Other responsibilities as required.
- Support overall collections management activities, and Digital Collections activities in particular.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or Museum Studies.
- 1-3 years of experience in archives or curation, with 1 year in digital curation and/or digital preservation.
- Experience with relevant aspects of archival operations including a strong understanding of archival theory and standards, best practices and their real-world application, trends and emerging technologies.
- Experience working with at least one digital asset management system or archival Digital Collections platform.
- Deep appreciation for, and demonstrated understanding of, the purpose and structure of archival-related discovery metadata and access environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of metadata content, structure, and preservation standards (MARC, EAD, METS, MODS, etc.).
- Working knowledge of historical research methodology.
- Basic understanding of copyright and data protection issues.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills combined with attention to detail for complex detail-oriented work.
- Excellent oral and written communications.
- Ability to work independently, as a team member, and across organizational boundaries in a highly demanding environment.
- Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action.
- Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic environment, involved with a variety of simultaneous projects.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science or Archival Studies.
- Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
- Knowledge or experience in a museum or cultural institution environment.
- Knowledge or experience in a sports or entertainment environment.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to storage areas with cool temperatures (60 degrees) on a frequent basis.
- Exposure to damp, dusty, and dirty areas.
- Able to physically handle collection items and boxes, including the ability to lift boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.
- Able to do a significant amount of walking daily (sports and event venues are large!)
