This position is currently located in Anchorage.
The position may be in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, depending upon the location of the most qualified candidate.
What you will be doing:
As a Dietitian 2, Nutrition Specialist, you will use public health approaches--aimed at policy, systems, and environmental improvements--to increase access to nutritious foods and beverages, reduce chronic diseases, and improve the health and wellness of all Alaskans. Specialty areas of subject matter expertise, training and technical assistance, and community collaboration building provided by this position include topic areas such as food is medicine programs (e.g., fruit and vegetable voucher incentive and produce prescription programs), food service guideline promotion, and early care and education center nutrition policy improvements. As Dietitian 2, you will also assist with federal grant reporting and contract management as well as public communication efforts.

Our Physical Activity & Nutrition Unit is a small team of public health professionals that includes a program manager, a physical activity specialist, a nutrition and ECE specialist, and a school health specialist. The Unit works closely with local, state, and national physical activity and nutrition promotion partners such as the CDC Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, & Obesity; University of North Carolina (UNC), Go Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAPSACC) program; Alaska Food Policy Council; Alaska Farmers Market Association; WIC & Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program; Thread, Inc. (Alaska's Child Care Resource & Referral Network); and State of Alaska Department of Education & Early Development to name a few.
The working environment you can expect:
The position is located in our Anchorage or Juneau offices or in Fairbanks (working remotely).
In Juneau, the office is located in the Alaska Office building in the heart of downtown, within easy walking distance to amenities and the waterfront. There is ample covered parking, a high level of building security, and access to vending machines for drinks and snacks.
This position is located on the 7th floor of the Frontier building in Anchorage. The office is situated with views of the Chugach Range, Mt. Denali (sans clouds), and the Cook Inlet. Conveniently located across the street from the Natural Pantry grocery store and Cuddy Family Midtown Park, the office location provides opportunities for break time, healthy foods and beverages, and physical activity. There is ample free covered parking, a high level of building security, and a nearby coffee stand. Currently, the Division of Public Health supports optional part-time hybrid telework schedules.
Who we are looking for:
To be successful in the position, the candidate will need the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the current science, principles, practices, and procedures of public health nutrition.
  • Knowledge of federal, State, and local or community-resourced health programs and relationships as they impact the dietary and nutritional needs of such special groups, such as nursing mothers, infants, children, and the elderly.
  • Skill in organizing, evaluating, and presenting information effectively, both orally and in writing, and conveying technical terms and information to both health professionals and laypeople.
  • Skill in providing technical guidance and consultation regarding diet and nutrition to physicians, nurses, health professionals, health program directors, and other allied health workers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals, the medical/health care community, community service providers, State and federal agencies, and other professionals in the field.
Special Note:
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association.
  • This position may require intermittent travel within the state to meet with partners. (Potentially one to two trips with up to 3 days length annually.)
  • This position may require travel to annual conferences. (Up to 5 days in length)

Minimum Qualifications
Licensure as a Dietitian with the State of Alaska;
AND
One year of specific experience providing either circumscribed dietetic and/or nutrition consultation and advisory services to clients in a defined region or geographical area or statewide assistance to higher-level consultants or managers in providing complex or extensive research and advisory services. This experience is equivalent to a Dietitian 1 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.
OR
A combined bachelor's degree from an accredited college in food and nutritional science, community nutrition, foodservice systems management, clinical and community dietetics, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, public health, sociology, or a closely related field and certification as either a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration;
AND
Five years of experience providing dietetic or nutritional services that includes any combination of diet counseling, development of nutritional care plans, determining eligibility for supplemental dietary and nutritional services, recommending types and amounts of services received, conducting nutritional needs assessments, monitoring food vendors, providing dietetic or nutritional counseling to professional health care providers, and/or preparing or developing relevant educational materials.
Substitution:
A combined master's degree from an accredited college in food and nutrition science, community nutrition, foodservice systems management, clinical and community dietetics, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, public health, sociology, or a closely related field and certification as either a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration may substitute for up to two years of the requisite experience.
A combined PhD from an accredited college in food and nutrition science, community nutrition, foodservice systems management, clinical and community dietetics, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, public health, sociology, or a closely related field and certification as either a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration may substitute for up to four years of the requisite experience.
Special Note:
All positions in this class require licensure as a Dietitian by the State of Alaska per 08.38.010(a). Continued employment is contingent upon successful licensure within six months of employment and persons employed under this provision must sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Some positions in this class may require specialization in and additional certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. Recruitment and selection for these positions will be from among only those candidates who have the appropriate specialty background and certification.
