Bastian Solutions' environmental, health, and safety team is responsible for the compliance safety and health during installation and project execution of material handling systems, warehouse automation, and parcel sortation systems for our customers. The Design Engineer (Safety) reports to the Corporate EHS Manager and will primarily work with engineering professionals and project teams to design and develop inherently safe material handling systems.
The Design Engineer (Safety) will be responsible for the overall management of the Bastian Solutions Global Machine Safety Specification Standard including administering the company's risk assessment program, machine and system integration conformance with consensus standards, resolving technical safety execution and organizational workflow, providing input on safety control devices, and fostering good communication with the Bastian Solutions project teams.
Job Functions
- Participate in system design and analysis of new material handling systems. Serve as subject-matter expert on machine design to integrate safety into the design processes of new machines and machine systems.
- Provide process support for health and safety processes such as risk assessments, failure modes effects analyses, functional safety documentation and analysis.
- Develop and maintain safe work methods for Bastian Solutions employees for the commissioning, servicing, maintaining, and troubleshooting of machines and equipment.
- Coordinate resources to guarantee timely readiness of all safety deliverables for product regulatory compliance and customer certification submissions.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and conformance to applicable consensus standards including ISO, IEC, ANSI, EN, FEM and other regulations and standards for the design of material handling equipment.
- Develop and conduct equipment-specific safety training for existing and new or future technologies integrated by Bastian Solutions.
- Maintain the Bastian Solutions Risk Assessment Template and Global Machine Safety Specifications Standard as well as regulatory compliance R D design checklists by monitoring for newly developed consensus standards, reviewing consensus standard revisions, updating the company's Standard accordingly, and communicating changes to affected employees.
- Participating in internal and customer risk assessments to promote consistency across projects.
- Implementing process improvements to reduce the amount of time project teams require to complete a risk assessment.
- Develop and maintain a field audit process to validate internally manufactured and integrated systems meet the Bastian Solutions Global Machine Safety Specifications Standard and address risks identified during the risk assessment.
- Develop a preventative maintenance and audit program for machines and equipment used within the Bastian Solutions manufacturing platform.
- Evaluate new vendor technologies for conformance to applicable safety standards before used within the company's design portfolio.
- Develop and maintain a pre-startup safety review for custom products and machines installed within the Bastian Solutions manufacturing platform and at customer project sites.
- Monitor, review, and report monthly project safety, process, and design deliverables.
- Provide direction and support related to underperforming and non-compliant projects to achieve performance targets and meet pertinent design standards.
- Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external customers.
- Provide leadership and open communication in maintaining strong internal and external customer relationships and in resolving issues and disputes.
- Serve as a proactive leader and problem solver, coaching and mentoring all concerning design safety and process compliance.
- Promote effective, efficient, and cooperative coordination among other departments.
Travel Requirements
- 40% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Bastian Solutions)
Preferred Skills and Required Qualifications
- BS Degree - Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical or Manufacturing preferred) or related fields
- Must have good knowledge of design and control safety principles for the US and the EU
- Prefer a minimum of 2 years of experience with automated industrial equipment (e.g., robot cells and conveyors systems), specifically control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout), machine guarding, safety devices, and risk assessment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite programs
- Demonstrated management, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing and train others
- Good judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
- Experience managing a process or procedure requiring a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail
- Ability in producing reports and developing relevant policies
- Organize and manage tasks and priorities with precision and a sense of urgency
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
