As a Configuration Engineer/ Design Engineer at Caterpillar, you will have an opportunity to direct and lead the development of new product and complex component and system concepts for release to production in a manner to ensure superior performance, durability, reliability, quality and serviceability to the worldwide marketplace.

This position is for a Configuration/Design Engineer in the Core Genset packaging product team.   The Packaging team is a cross platform engineering group that manages products for multiple platforms and market segments. As a configuration engineer, you will be part of the maintenance team through product configuration and structuring requirements to meet marketing, factory requirements, and technical requirements/specifications. Teams will consist of both internal and external partners, and you will be responsible for ensuring the proper product rules created related to design, integration, application, and ready for market requirements. You will manage the planning and execution of project tasks for the projects that you support, develop, and grow your generator set application knowledge and team leadership skills, and broaden your professional network. 

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

The successful candidate will support global manufacturing of large generator sets.  Specific job roles include product structure releasing, maintenance, and support.  This includes releasing and extending BoMs to facilities.  This role also includes managing BoM issue resolution activities to support production BoM accuracies to meet customer delivery dates.  The candidate will work across global facilities to drive BoM improvements while working across multiple organizations.  The candidate will also assist in evaluation of engineering design deviations and change requests by other departments.  The candidate will also support customer related issues ensuring proper information and data are available on demand for customer supported activities. In this role, you will advance your engineering skills, assembly/manufacturing skills, communication skills and networking skills. This specific role includes hands-on factory support for integrated generator controls across all product lines manufactured in the Lafayette facility. Ensures accurate BoMs for all managed pricelists by maintaining EHDs (Engineering Handoff Documents). This engineer also creates new pricing arrangements and updates existing, ensuring pricelists drive accurate material list on orders. Works with marketing and product definition teams on pricelist updates and helps route PLCNs. Provides support for shop issues by investigating, coordinating with L3s, identifying RCCA and providing ICA’s. Some of the responsibilities include:

A successful candidate will interact with a global team and have strong communication skills both written and spoken with desired skills in basic engineering tools including Pro/E, Teamcenter, EDS, VisMockup and drawing standards; an understanding of electrical systems tools like PSPS, Cat ET, and CANape. SAP business systems would be helpful as well.

Top candidates will have experience in all and/or some of these areas:  engineering and factory systems, Med-V, 3500, and C175 products, demonstrated ability to deliver quality results with a sense of urgency, and experience delivering NPI, CPI, and/or cost reduction projects. 

  • Maintenance of all EP, Marine, Oil & Gas production package pricelists
  • Ensure accurate BoMs for all managed pricelists by maintaining EHDs up to date
  • Ensure pricelist top down model quality and their conformance to respective EHD
  • Leverage VDRA/VB processes to proactively resolve potential package build issues
  • Resolve open VDRA issues, actively work to close them, and reduce issue count
  • Log known issues in tracker, audit future orders and process order updates as necessary
  • Take ownership of implementing issue PCA by engaging L4s and L3s as needed
  • Create new pricing arrangements and update existing as necessary ensuring pricelists drive accurate material list on orders
  • Work with marketing and product definition teams on pricelist updates and help route PLCNs as necessary
  • Provide support for shop issues by investigating, coordinating with L3s, identifying RCCA and providing ICA
  • Help manage AQEs, drive PCA resolution, regularly update and report out AQE metrics
  • Lead/support package CPI resolution activities and drive them to closure
  • Coordinate conducting virtual and physical fit-ups to validate design changes before implementing in pricelist
  • Provide genset specific PSPS support to test cells and EMCP supplier, address any issues with incorrect or missing flash files in a timely manner
  • Perform data mining, develop charts, coordinate Power BI creation to support assurance of supply initiatives
  • Manage product compliance and regulatory requirements, collaborate with non-emissions compliance team and lead any issue mitigation efforts for all gas and diesel packages. Provides technical leadership to Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Marketing, Sales, Service and other departments to solve the more difficult problems
  • Works closely technicians, plant personnel, and suppliers regarding product design, test and production schedule dates
  • Refines and improves product designs by investigating and developing solutions to product design problems
  • Works with customers, dealers, and other departments throughout the resolution process
  • Initiates and develops plans and controls the stages through production release
  • Provides leadership to drafting personnel and assembly engineers
  • Provides guidance to Assemblers and Test Engineers during product build-up and testing
  • Ensures proper maintenance of production drawings.
  • Frequently travels to domestic production plants, dealerships and customer job sites to solve design problems and to field test locations to assist with the development of engineering projects

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering AND 3 years on Engineering experience
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills, a good mechanical and/or electrical/electronic aptitude, and good communications skills. 

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Experience with Caterpillar systems (HVC, EDS, Teamcenter)
  • 2 years of Cat design experience and factory support
  • 2 years experience with Genset Product configuration
  • Prior experience with product releasing to global facilities.
  • Exposure to Caterpillar Quality including Warranty, DPU, CPI
  • Exposure to Operations, Purchasing, Supply Chain teams.
  • Exposure to NPI/CPI/Warranty/DPU
  • Advanced computer skills
