DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services, the Dean will serve with a student-centered, equity-centric focus, leading the development, improvement, management, and coordination of student services and other programs in the areas of assigned responsibilities. Programs directly reporting to the Dean include, but are not limited to, Student Success Program, Commencement, Student Development/Restorative Justice, Associated Student Organization/Inter-Club Council, and Student Activities. In addition to program development and course support, the Dean is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Division’s personnel, budget, and curriculum development as well as serving as the Division’s advocate to the Administration.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

(E) = denotes essential duties of the position

• Provide leadership for student learning, program development, and success. Work directly with faculty and department chairs to develop culturally relevant, accessible curriculum and programs designed to eradicate disproportionate impact gaps, set priorities for resource needs, provide program analysis and multi year student development plans, and participate in strategic and long-range student services planning for the district. (E)

• Provide leadership and student-centered customer service that demonstrates understanding of Antelope Valley College’s mission and the diverse students we serve. (E)

• Provide leadership in the development of necessary and advantageous programs and services designed to assure that students receive the equitable support needed to successfully transition into and complete their college program of study. (E)

• Participate in outreach activities and maintain effective communication with feeder school districts, community-based organizations, and public agencies; develop and participate in college-community partnerships; make public presentations on behalf of the college. (E)

• Stay abreast of state and national trends and innovations related to the following: DEIA, assigned programs and service areas; alternative student service delivery systems; research related to student characteristics, student learning outcomes, and the college environment; the role of technology in delivering student services; and faculty and staffing hiring procedures. (E)

• Regularly analyze division staffing needs and make recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Student Services; hire, supervise, develop and evaluate assigned staff and provide appropriate staff support; assure compliance with the District’s personnel policies, procedures, and practices. (E)

• Direct the administration, development, and implementation of the student conduct/discipline process; re-envision the process as development and opportunity; ensure compliance with the Student Discipline Policy; coordinate and direct activities to ensure proper and timely resolution of issues and conflicts related to student disciplinary matters and grievances; coordinate and conduct meetings and hearings related to student discipline, grievances, and appeals. (E)

• Effectively supervise and regularly evaluate staff. (E)

• Support staff development and professional growth. (E)

• Promote the needs of the Division to on and off-campus organizations and groups, on committees, and at meetings. (E)

• Set priorities for resource needs; prepare budget requests that emphasize funding of priorities that promote the eradication of disproportionate impact gaps as well as equity-driven initiatives; identify resources available through grants and alternative sources; allocate funds; and prioritize division financial needs, including new hires, program funding, and technology; and communicate those priorities clearly to the appropriate departments. (E)

• Maintain and encourage effective communication with division staff by holding regular staff meetings; provide information to staff about issues, programs, and practices affecting the college, division, and departments. (E)

• Recommend and participate in the development of policy as necessary for the District to properly implement culturally relevant and effective Student Support programs. (E)

• Provide clearly written reports and analyses for agreed upon metrics to reach institutional and statewide goals. (E)

• Provide leadership that promotes an equitable, service oriented, positive working environment and a high level of morale among all staff within the division. (E)

• Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other staff, offices, and divisions to effectively integrate and coordinate programs and services across the campus. (E)

• Actively participate in the College’s policy and decision-making committees; support the participatory governance process. (E)

• Cultivate and sustain a positive culture of care for students and all levels of division staff and work cooperatively with other campus personnel to integrate and coordinate programs and services across the curriculum. (E)

• Manage fiscal and contractual elements of all federal, state, local and private grants including grant reporting, grant programming including operations, contract negotiation/approval, and space planning and management. (E)

• Work to effectively resolve conflicts and issues within the division and between divisions in the spirit of collegiality utilizing due process, adhering to collective bargaining agreements as appropriate. (E)

• Maintain an effective working knowledge of computers and related technologies that improve efficiencies in office management including electronic spreadsheets, word processing, data collection, and internet/intranet capabilities. (E) 

• Coordinate the program review process within the assigned division. (E)

• Participate in the rotating responsibility of Administrator on Duty, and be available for day, evening, or weekend assignments. (E)

• Participate actively at multiple educational sites. (E)

• Other duties as assigned. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Master’s degree from an accredited higher education institution.

• One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment (Title 5, section 53420. Minimum Qualifications for Educational Administrators).

• Demonstrated commitment to equity-based leadership and programming that grows access and support to address disproportionate impact gaps.

• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, differing abilities, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, passion for the pursuit of DEIA principles and how that positively impacts the organization, and how positive leadership successfully promotes the achievement of all students’ educational goals.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in a reasonably related field.

• Three (3) years of progressive leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment.

• Proven and demonstrated success in employee development, change management, and conflict resolution.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Driver’s License

ABILITY TO:

• Work evenings and weekends as required.
