Job description

The Dean & Culture Associateis responsible for providing open and consistent lines of communications with the student body, parents, and the community throughout the school year and during the summer. This individual is also responsible for supporting the success of scholars in the classroom by developing strong culture systems in concert with restorative practices. 

This position will end in June 2024.

Essential Job Functions

  • School Culture / Student Engagement
    • Helping to reinforce the effective use of a school wide behavior plans and coordinates appropriate measures as needed with school leaders and/or school counselors; responds to behavioral issues; supports in the coordination in-school and out-of-school suspensions; and oversees school safety
    • Collaboration with other members of the culture team to address school culture and discipline issues in the school. 
    • Support the team with issues of school culture, classroom management, discipline, and relationships with students; and help teachers and staff in holding all students to high and consistent behavioral expectations
    • Assist in implementing programs that recognize and reward students; support school-wide procedures and protocols in response to academic and behavioral needs of students, and support teachers and administration in the enforcement of school-wide policies on a consistent basis
    • Assist in facilitating staff training in behavior management policies, techniques, strategies, and related data, as well as ensuring the consistent use of chosen strategies in classrooms throughout the school by participating in walkthroughs
    • Regularly review and respond to all assigned referrals and school culture tracker entries (if applicable)
    • Facilitate meetings with students around their behavior and identify appropriate next steps
  • Safety
    • Assist in supervising student entrance/dismissal, locker rooms, lunchroom and hallway duty as needed under the direction of the Dean and Culture Specialist II and or other appropriate staff members
    • Collaboratively ensure schoolwide adherence to the school code of conduct and uniform policy
    • Collaborate to implement behavior management tools in alignment with restorative practices/strategies, including facilitating staff training in behavior management policies, techniques, strategies, and the related data as well
  • Community Engagement
  • Assist in meetings with students' parents/guardians and teachers, and ensure that responses for infractions are fairly and consistently implemented throughout the school
  • Respond to student behavioral issues and communicate with families.
  • Support teachers on issues of school culture, classroom management, discipline, and relationships with students; and help teachers and staff in holding all students to high and consistent behavioral expectations and ensuring the consistent use of chosen strategies in classrooms throughout the school
  • Communications
    • Facilitate open and consistent lines of communication with students, families and school personnel, including meeting with students, listening, and referring them for counseling services as appropriate
    • Consistently maintains confidentiality for students and families in alignment with HIPAA and FERPA.  
    • Participate in CMO professional development and School Culture Leadership team support meetings
  • Data Analysis and Reporting
    • Participate in student support team meetings.
    • Support the school-wide use of tools for reporting and documenting infraction data and other information, in order to ensure that proper records are kept and timely data are generated for staff review.
  • Administrative Services
  • Participate in maintaining a welcoming and efficient front office that emphasizes organization, professionalism, courtesy, flexibility, and teamwork.
  • Perform general office management tasks including maintaining student discipline records.
  • Technology
    • Learn and work with school specific adopted administrative technology, including, but not limited to Google Classroom and G-Suit

Secondary Job Functions

  • Support with school events, including fire drills, scanning, sports, events and emergencies
  • Additional responsibilities as needed consistent with the general nature of the position

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree, Bachelors in counseling, social work, or related field preferred 
  • At least 2 years relevant experience

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, Bilingual preferred 
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Google docs, spreadsheets and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines coupled with the ability to think and act strategically
  • Demonstrated success working with students and families
  • Responds to concerns with social and cultural sensitivity.
  • Cultural competency and commitment to equity 
  • Ability to work effectively in a student-centered environment
  • Effective at establishing and cultivating strong relationships to work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals and objectives
