Institutional Overview
Texas A&M University-Central Texas (A&M-Central Texas) became a stand-alone university on May 27, 2009, one of 11 universities within the Texas A&M University System. A&M-Central Texas is an upper-level institution offering the junior- and senior-level coursework needed to successfully complete baccalaureate degrees and all coursework leading to the completion of graduate degrees, including master’s and specialist programs. The university provides a wide range of flexible course schedules, including online, hybrid, evening, and weekend classes.

The beautiful new campus of A&M-Central Texas is located on 672 acres of land in Killeen, Texas. Located in the heart of central Texas, Killeen has a city population of over 153,000, a metro population of 496,000, and a thriving economy fueled by Fort Cavazos, one of the largest military bases in the country. Killeen is approximately an hour north of Austin and is situated within the I-35 corridor, one of the fastest-growing trans-metropolitan regions in North America. This area is known for its low cost of living, friendly people, cultural diversity, and its well-developed infrastructure. Killeen provides easy access to major metro areas of Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston.

About the College

The College Education and Human Development (CEHD) at A&M-Central Texas enrolls approximately 650 students across its three departments: Counseling and Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, and Educational Leadership and Human Development. CEHD offers undergraduate degrees in Education, Psychology, and Exercise Physiology & Human Performance. CEHD offers several graduate degrees, including master’s degrees in Applied Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Higher Education Leadership, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Teaching, as well as a specialist degree in School Psychology. CEHD has 24 full-time faculty members, two advisors, five field supervisors, and eight staff. The college is proud of its outstanding faculty and staff, innovative curriculum, and family-friendly atmosphere.

The Position

The dean will serve as the academic and administrative leader for the college and will be responsible for the strategic and academic direction of its operations. The dean will work with department chairs, faculty, and staff to achieve the goals of the college and the university through shared governance, collaborative and consultative processes, and consensus building. The dean will be committed to faculty and staff development and adopting strategies to support faculty teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the teacher-scholar model. The dean will report to the provost/vice president for academic and student affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a vision for the college that is consistent with the university’s mission and embraces innovation, high-quality educational outcomes, enrollment growth, and student success.

  • Develop and oversee plans for intermediate and long-term college growth in consultation with department chairs, faculty, and staff. Integrate these plans into the college’s institutional effectiveness plan and strategic plan.

  • Support the university’s student-recruiting programs and develop college-level student-recruiting programs serving both traditional and non-traditional students.

  • Initiate and support activities resulting in continuous improvement of undergraduate and graduate teaching and research, including program accreditation, ongoing curriculum review, reporting quality assurance through the college’s institutional effectiveness report, and external funding.

  • Maintain expertise in, ensure compliance with, and provide support for meeting college, state, and national expectations and standards, including program-specific state standards for approved programs (e.g., TEA standards for education preparation) and program-specific standards for accreditation (e.g., CACREP, COAMFTE, NASP).

  • Provide oversight of the Department of Educator Preparation Services.

  • Develop college-level plans for student success through career-focused student retention and internship/employment/volunteer placement programs for serving all traditional and non-traditional students.

  • Support plans for student success across multiple levels of the university (e.g., system, university, college, departmental, and program).

  • Create and foster collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote belonging, connection, and engagement.

  • Supervise and support the administrative staff and department chairs in the conduct of the routine business of the college.

  • Maintain programs for effective academic advising, degree planning, and maintenance of student records.

  • Supervise the development of personnel policies and procedures within the college and ensure compliance and consistency with university and system-wide faculty personnel policies and procedures.

  • Identify faculty and staff personnel needs and demonstrate a commitment to the recruitment, advancement, and retention of faculty and staff.

  • Develop and manage the budget for the college.

  • Provide support to student organizations and activities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Doctoral degree in or closely related to education or Human Development (e.g., education, psychology/counseling, exercise physiology).

  • Five years of progressive leadership experience at the department chair or higher level, which includes managing budgets and recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty in the tenure-and-promotion process.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience interacting with agencies responsible for providing certification and/or credentialing guidelines to academic programs (e.g., TEA, CACREP, COAMFTE, NASP, etc.)

  • Experience in developing, articulating, and communicating a vision and strategic priorities while creating a culture that is participatory and inclusive for faculty and staff.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research and the ability to develop processes that encourage and support faculty teaching and research.

  • Demonstrated leadership style that is open, approachable, fair, transparent, and participative.

  • Proven record of leadership and service to the community.

  • Ability to communicate with constituents at all levels, including students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

  • Proven commitment to employing best practices in person and online in teaching, research, and service to support faculty, staff, and students.

  • Demonstrated experience in planning, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using assessment data for continuous improvement.

  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to a flexible, family-friendly work environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to promote a sense of belonging, connection, and engagement with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Experience in fostering a college culture that has a student-centered focus.
