What our team does:

Coastal's Analytics and Insights Team delivers excellence at the intersection of Data Science, research, and financial industry expertise. We identify the questions and find the answers that solve the most pressing issues at the credit union. Our work uses outcomes from Data Science to synthesize, contextualize, and present insights and recommendations actionable for leaders across the organization. This encompasses product insights, member insights, and market insights.

Your opportunities and contributions:

Coastal Credit Union's Data Science Summer Internship Program is a 10-week program for a select group of highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students to work on Data Science projects over the summer that answer key questions for the credit union. As a participant in the program, you will help to develop and implement data-driven solutions that will drive business decisions. You will have the opportunity to learn from and be supported by a collaborative Insights and Analytics Team. Interns will also work with senior management and use this program to potentially identify full-time hires for the Analytics and Insights Team.

These full-time, paid internships are located in Raleigh, NC, and support Coastal's hybrid work environment.

Depending on the project, responsibilities may include some of the following:

1. Preprocessing of data through standardization, normalization, cleaning, and formatting.
2. Analyzing data to identify patterns, trends, and insights using statistical methods and techniques.
3. Extracting features and building machine learning models.
4. Producing clear, concise, documented, and production-ready code.
5. Creating visualizations and reports to communicate findings to stakeholders.

• Someone who possesses a natural curiosity to learn, ask questions, identify mistaken assumptions, and bring an open-minded approach to research
• An analytical person with keen problem-solving skills and the ability to translate complex data and strategies into simple, actionable recommendations
• Detail-oriented with a demonstrated passion for data.

Interested? Here's what we would like to see on your resume:

• Experience performing exploratory data analysis on real-world datasets
• Knowledge of statistical modeling, machine learning, mathematical optimization, and/or data mining.
• Experience using and evaluating machine learning models
• Understanding of the Data Science lifecycle
• Proficiency in Python or R and SQL
• Intellectual curiosity and the ability to conduct independent research on new topics
• Excellent verbal and communication skills
• Experience presenting data using data visualization tools.
• Proficiency with PowerBI is a plus

To be considered for the 2023 Summer Internship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Graduate student pursuing an advanced degree in a Data Science related field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, or related field.)
• Enrolled at an accredited institution or have graduated within 12 months of the program
• Eligible to work in the U.S.
