Salary Range:

  • Hiring salary is budgeted/anticipated at $7,020 - $7,438 per month plus 15% stipend per month commensurate with education and experience
  • CSU Salary Range: $7,020 - $13,594 per month.

Position Summary:  This individual provides Technology Support for the annual training cruise. This individual shall sail with the training ship every year for the entire duration of the cruise. 

About the California State University Maritime Academy:

Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.

Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering,  Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard, and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.

Major Responsibilities

USER SUPPORT

Responsible for all duties associated with providing technical support services to the ship during the annual cruise.

Provides Technology Support for audio visual equipment on the ship.

Creates and updates user manuals and training materials, including step-by-step guides and video tutorials, to help users understand how to user various IT related systems and applications.

Develops and maintains standard operating procedures for IT-related tasks, such as system backups, software updates, and virus scanning.

CONSULTATION

Assist with various cruise related data systems as applicable.

Provides Technology Support for Sim lab on the ship.

Collaborates with other IT staff to identify areas where documentation is needed and/or can be improved, and making updates as needed.

Ensures that all IT related documentation is up-to-date and accurate, and that it is easily accessible to others.

SITE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION

Troubleshoots computer hardware, software, and associated peripherals on training vessel.

Responsible for various vessel satellite and communication systems.

Supports network hardware, software, and connectivity technology on the training vessel.

Support the ship's telephone systems during annual cruise

Develop and maintain documentation of system configurations, including hardware and software installations, network configurations, and security policies.

Required Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study.
  • Minimum Two (2) years of experience supporting technology end users required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
  • Must be able to obtain USCG Medical card.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, (TWIC).
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. Passport.
  • Pre-employment drug test required or proof that a successful drug test has been administered within six months prior to hire.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills are required.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task are required.
  • Ability to document technical systems is required.
  • Knowledgeable with industry standards and best practices for end user hardware and software.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting ability required to solve non-routine, complex problems as they arise in a maritime environment.
  • General knowledge of satellite communications systems a plus.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and with a positive attitude.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships.
  • Excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work well with both internal customers as well as external entities.
  • Computer hardware and software skills are required.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and attempt repairs on hardware and software through consultation with IT.
  • Detail-oriented and excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of information technology systems and/or applications, including campuswide systems and multimedia environments, access procedures, networks, and/or databases.
  • Ability to integrate multiple applications and/or systems.
  • Proficiency using standard software packages.
  • Ability to analyze data requirements and research data availability and access methods.
  • Knowledge of data administration principles and techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate and implement data exchanges and conversions.
  • Knowledge of system utilities, features, installation and maintenance procedures, and general operation.
  • Basic knowledge of data and file structures, database systems and related utilities, operating systems, and communication interface programs.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot system connection and interface malfunctions.
  • General knowledge of operating systems and hardware for problem identification and analysis. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong networking and troubleshooting skills, Active Directory, Database, Windows server experience are preferred.
  • Experience in a secondary or higher education setting preferred
  • Knowledge of copyright laws and industry standards.
  • Ability to work with customers who have varying degrees of technical expertise.
  • Ability to conduct thorough research and evaluate information for accuracy and relevance.
  • Ability to identify, develop, and coordinate plans for use of site resources (e.g., staffing budget, and materials) and to define site procedures for ongoing administration and maintenance.

Special Conditions: 

Shipboard Requirements:

Ability to function successfully in limited living and working spaces, climb ship ladders and stairs and transit narrow hallways, and to perform assigned duties maintain balance while occasionally experiencing rolling motion aboard ship; ability to lift and move heavy weights (up to 50 lbs.) in a safe manner.

Summer Training Cruise Documentation/ Requirements: The Cruise Technology Technician will be required to attend a USCG certified Basic Safety Training Course, attend a USCG certified Security Awareness course. The Cruise Technology Technician will be required to obtain a pre-cruise physical as well.

  • Regularly sit, stand, walk through narrow passages, ascend and descend ladders and stairs.
  • Tolerate exposure to extreme weather conditions including rain, and high winds and extremes of temperatures.
  • Use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls.
  • Reach and work overhead with arms and hands.
  • Lift at least a 40 pound load off the ground, and to carry, push or pull the same load.
  • Open and close water tight doors of 55 pounds or more.
  • Work in areas of high noise and/or low light.
  • Work aloft at heights above 6 ft.
  • Work in confined spaces.

Hours of Work/Travel: 40 hours per week. This is an exempt position.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions: 

  • Up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; involves lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.
  • Is exposed to excessive noise
  • Is around moving machinery
  • Is exposed to marked changes in temperature and/or humidity
  • Is exposed to dust, fumes, gases, radiation, microwave

Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, DMV records check, fingerprinting, physical and drug screening) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
