Position Announcement

Are you a motivated professional looking for a fulfilling position in higher education? Join our like-minded staff who are passionate about student success. At UVU, we believe every individual has tremendous potential. We are an open-admissions school, so everyone is welcome. As an integrated community college and teaching university, we offer everything from certificates to master’s degrees.
The Counselor in Academic Standards will counsel and coach students experiencing academic difficulty to encourage student success, retention, and a return to Good Academic Standing. Works within three main student-centered domains: increasing self-awareness, developing academic skills, and helping access and navigate resources. Duties include academic coaching, explaining policies and procedures, making referrals, maintaining records and preparing statistical reports, interpreting career/interest and personality assessments, navigating academic challenges and facilitating academic recovery, participating in ongoing training and development, coordinating with other individuals and entities on campus, and representing the department on various projects, committees, and in meetings as assigned by the director.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Provide students with academic coaching related to discovering strengths, assessing areas of need, overcoming barriers, and developing effective learning strategies and habits. Follow a collaborative, goal-setting approach to taking action around behaviors that lead to academic recovery and continued success. Evaluate student concerns and counsel those with exceptional circumstances or hardships while adhering to Academic Standards policies and procedures. Develop and implement strategies for students’ unique situations. Refer students to appropriate campus resources in response to sessions.
  • Maintain a caseload of Academic Standards students (warning, probation, continued probation, suspension, and dismissal standings) and other special populations as required. Participate in outreach efforts to retain students experiencing academic difficulty. Manage student records, academic standings, and academic holds based on the completion of workshops, petitions, mid-semester grade reports, grade adjustments, and standing changes. Communicate changes in standing or hold status to students. Re-onboard students returning to UVU from Academic Suspension and Academic Dismissal through an intake process.
  • Administer and interpret career, personality, and interest assessments and inventories to assist students with self-awareness, skill development, and self-efficacy.
  • Engage in professional development and remain current in academic support and coaching best practices and research. Adapt and apply research and professional development related to knowledge to academic advising, academic coaching, and academic support practice and associated work activities. Remains current on major curriculum, university policy, and campus resources.
